Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm 9 weeks out looking to keep some quick non Liquid Protein in my office desk? Has anyone tried beef Jerky? If so, how long after surgery did you try it?

It is for the solid food phase and can be tough to chew adequately. You can't hurt yourself by trying a couple bites if you are in the correct diet phase. Just don't buy it in bulk as you may find it isn't for you yet.

I've been eating it since about 5 or six weeks out and probably could have eaten it sooner as I've had no problems eating anything, just eating too much of anything. I really like Jack Links because it always seems fresh and not completely dried out.

Omg! Buy bacon Jerky. It's fantastic! I have only found it at Walmart, but I am sure it is sold elsewhere.

I never tried any "regular" beef Jerky in the 1st 6 months. I figured it was too dry and tough for my new stomach. I did try some Umberto bacon jerkey after I was on full foods for a few weeks. It was soft and chewy like soft cooked bacon (cause that's all it really is - smoked bacon). Frankensleeve had no trouble digesting it. :-)

II am 7 months out but beef Jerky has been a staple for me since about 4 months. I've been one to have terrible difficulty with food but for some reason, beef jerky has worked fine. I did cut it up into fingernail clipping sized pieces from the the start but it provides me a ton of daily Protein every day.

I have tried every brand, every store, every price point and the the Walmart brand is the best for me! I like the sweet hot. You can see through each pack to see if that cut looks fatty, dry, etc. It's the least expensive and the best quality in my opinion. Love it.

My kids laugh because I truly do almost live off it. They love it, too, so the fact that I always have a mega pack in my car for them to snack off of bothers them not at all.

I started eating beef Jerky by about 2 months post op and still use it as a snack every now and then ( sometimes more often) I buy the small individual size bags and that tends to be a serving at about 100 cals and 18 Protein. I also keep low fat string cheese and almonds at work for Snacks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
