Irritable Bowel Syndrome Pre-surgery

Recommended Posts

I've been on the 3 month pre surgery diet where I've given up sugar, carbonated drinks, and most everything they say we can't have. I've been pretty good and I'm losing the weight I was told to lose before surgery but... Even some of the healthy shakes do not agree with me and cause me to have bouts of diarrhea and then Constipation. I went to a wedding yesterday and could not resist a small piece of wedding cake. Well, bad choice, big mistake. My daughter had to drive me to a service station and I was in the worst pain of my life. I thought I was going to die. I've not even had the surgery yet and my stomach is already rejecting foods. How will I ever survive after surgery? Has anybody else had this problem??

I would give up the sugar! I have had long term diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome. I am doing great a little over 1 month post op, and 3 months pre-op diet. My husband is diabetic and I was on metformin for diabetes, so we eat no sugar. You may have a problem with gas after your surgery, which causes pain. But the dumping and problems you can have from carbs, sugar and fried foods after surgery will cause you to steer clear from these foods. You may get by with a taste or two at times but I think there is always a risk. At a peer to peer meeting this week a lady described a terrible scenario after eating pineapple. Personally I don't want to experience this so I will leave the fruit alone. You and I have a long way to go and a lot to learn during this journey, and we have to do our best to follow the guidelines we are given. I have had no stomach problems following surgery, and I am focusing on eating healthy with Protein and Fiber (which is recommended for our stomachs), and hope to stay this way. All of us experience a problem with food at times in our life, and your stomach wasn't rejecting the cake. I guess it didn't want it. I also decided I will not go back on Diet Coke, after 4 months I know I do not need it and can live without it. Saving me some money! You will survive this with a new healthier YOU! Good luck!

I agree with LindarfromFlorida.

Pre-surgery I battled Fibromyalgia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I've given up sugar, even though I bake lots of cakes and Cookies for family members. I haven't had any IBS problems post-op. As I re-introduce food into my diet I am discovering what my stomach does not like, fried foods, spicy foods.

Take it one day at a time. When you get to the point that you are re-introducing food, try a new food when you are not straying away from home. That way if you have an incident, you are safe within your own home.

I would give up the sugar!

I've had terrible dumping syndrome ever since my gall bladder removal in 08. I've wondered these same things. I don't care what I eat, I get the cramps and diarrhea. Sometimes before I'm even finished eating. I've wondered the same thing. How will I survive...

It's been almost a year now, and (as a fellow IBS-er) I'm curious - how did it all end up working out? Did the IBS go away post-op?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
