Am I in the right place?

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping I'm in the right place & that there are some long term veterans of the bypass like I am. I had the Roux-en-Y surgery in 2000 & to say I've had a rocky road is an understatement. I'm looking for people to share my experiences with & maybe find some people who've had long term problems. Just from the little I've read on here so far, there doesn't seem to be any really long term vets like I am & I don't want to scare people unnecessarily. I know things are probably done very differently now. Even within months of my surgery (approx. a yr.) the immediate post-op diet & the one that went forward for mo.s, the pain meds & other things had changed significantly enough that a friend of mine who had it done after me had an easier time losing weight & keeping it off. I believe it would have made a huge difference weight wise for me. Anyway, if this is the place to post about my issues, if there are others like me who have had long term issues or if there's another topic or area on here I should go to, maybe someone could let me know. I'm new to forums.

I would love to hear your story too!

I had my RNY December 2004. I was very successful up until 2 years ago. I originally lost 155 lbs, and I have now gained 86 lbs back to date. The last 2 years I have had major back problems. From all the running and exercising I did over the years, i developed degenerative disc and arthritis in my lower back.

I had to have emergency back surgery last year due to the disc pressing on a nerve that caused me to have permanent nerve damage and now i have drop foot, and can no longer and will never be able to run again.

With all the steroids I was on, the weight just started coming back on!

Then last year around this time, i went to the ER because my stomach was so swollen and i couldn’t stop throwing up. I was faced with emergency surgery yet again, for an obstruction. One and a half hour surgery ended up taking 4 1/2 hours. When they went in, they found my intestines were twisted, and after they untwisted them they found a small hole, which they closed up.

So now, here i am, a year later, and i went to a doctor to see if there was a revision they could do to help me start losing the weight again, and was told that my pouch was the same size it was back in 2004, and doing a band over bypass was not going to help me lose the weight i wanted to lose. The doctor said that I would lose at the most, 30 lbs.

So he wasn’t eager to do it. So now I’m stuck, struggling with my weight, watching the numbers go up on a weekly basis. Changing my eating habits since I can’t work out the way i want to, or enough to help me lose the weight i want to lose.

Has anyone else experienced re-gaining weight and trouble losing it?????

Hello, I had an open rny on 8/7/01 and got down to 134 kept it off until 09 when my mother died traumatic. I stopped eating, the I started staying nauseated and real sharp pains in my stomach. I ended up having to have my appendix out and found out I had a hiatal hernia. Well I found a doctor that was familiar with bypass patients. He ended up doing a revision from bypass to bypass and fixing my hernia. I needed up gaining 66 pounds even though I was not eating. I also found out I was Vitamin d deficiency which originally I was never told I need to take Vitamin D. Now I am on all these Vitamins and no desire to drink or eat but I am trying. You really h e to find right doctor for a revision.

O wow. It seems like we have all the same issues and still dealing with problems. Yea I lost mouth of my teeth at 34 yrs old and have dentures now. Get sick all the tine due to lowered immune. Major bone issues. Just had back surgery in October and had multiple surgeries due to problems with rny. Have issue with pain and getting sick when eating with no reaons why and not due to what I'm eating. I'd live to see what else we can talk about. Ik this sounds awful but I'm so happy to talk to people with issues like me after I was told that um an odd case and not the norm post op.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
