I ate a piece of pizza last night..... And I liked it!

Had surgery 12/2 and invited my niece and nephew over for a sleepover. I should have prepared in advance as I had nothing in my cabinets to feed them but Soups, Beans and protein!

So, we ordered pizza and I made the decision to have one slice for dinner. It was delicious and I still finished my day under 600 calories. My Protein intake was low as I didn't have my usual Protein Drink at night due to being full.

Now I'm starting to worry that this was a bad decision and my first step on a slippery slope. Is it possible to enjoy a treat now and again and still be diligent about my diet?

I think it's totally possible to enjoy a treat now and then. But I do worry that it is too early in your diet for pizza. And I say that based on what my surgeon's recommendations were, no idea what yours told you.

I know that for me, once I have done something and "nothing happens" it is easy to justify doing it again. So I was pretty ultra-vigilant until I got cleared to solids. But again, whether this signifies a slippery slope for you? Only you can answer that.

Even though I'm 8 weeks out I still haven't had sweets. Very rare "regular" carbs. I just figure, why decide that I should do it? It'll make the next time that much easier. YMMV.

Yep, that's how I think. I am 3 months out, having been sleeved on Sept. 25. I have yet to go against medical advice, or have any sweets, or carbs. It really and truly is just Protein for me. Am I seriously craving a glass of wine? You betcha....I look at my wine rack every night when I come home from work. But for me, like FluffnoMore, I know that once I break that abstinence, it will be much easier to justify to myself to do it again. I am not trying to sound like I am better than anyone, by any means, that is just how it works for me. All or nothing, that's how I roll!!

I say this with much love and concern - what were you thinking? I am guessing pizza is not on your NUT's list of approved food. Right now, my concern is for your (new, delicate) sleeve. Please follow your NUT and/or doc's direction with regard to diet.

OK - motherly moment over.

Addressing your question about "treats". I think, in time, there could be room for treats, but that's down the line - way down the line. And maybe the definition of "treat" is different post-op than it was pre-op. For me a treat was a bowl of ice cream or a trip to Dairy Queen. While I'm hesitant to say I'll never have those again, I know that they aren't an option in my near future. I need to CHOOSE different treats - a treat 5 weeks post op is some cottage cheese with some sugar free Syrup or Greek yogurt.

Last night you chose to have pizza over the other things you had in your pantry - you could have chosen a Protein shake or something else. This surgery didn't change your want or desire to have food - it changed your ability to have a lot of food. This journey is going to be a lot about choices.

Oh boy! Now if definitely feel guilty!!! But you're all correct. I have followed my Dr's orders and restrictions religiously and screwed up last night. I should have eaten off of my list before the pizza arrived so I wasn't hungry.

You'll be happy to know I did follow that rule this morning when my father announced he was coming over with donuts for the kids. I prepared my egg and spinach beforehand and didn't even think twice about the dozen donuts sitting on the table.

Thank you for the tough love. It's not always easy to hear but it is definitely helpful. I just love this outlet, you all are wonderful and supportive!

i don't think you slipped enough to regret WLS

you made the wise decision to have the surgery, don't second guess yourself now

get back to work - show your strength and determination i know you have!!! :)

pizza is a common joke on the board - cuz some/many of us want to eat it

and months done the line you can have that slice, buttttttttttttt

Hi,

I will put my two cents in here. You were only 18 days post-op when you ate pizza. I don't know what stage of food you are supposed to be on at this time. If this is not on the plan at this time, you shouldn't eat it. You are still healing at this time. Most of us had weight loss surgery because we didn't eat healthy before and overdid things around food. Right now is the time to follow your doctor's orders and nutritionist advice. They have been doing this and have a lot of success helping patients achieve their goals. Pushing the limit this early can be dangerous. You can search this forum and see stories, and yes they include death from eating a food too soon. I myself am not willing to take that risk. You get the best results in the first 6 months so try to take advantage of this time period. Form good eating habits so they become the norm for you and more automatic. You will be faced with more instances of making a healthy choice when tempted by other foods. Learn from this and try to do better next time.

I am a revision patient which means that I have had a previous weight loss surgery before my sleeve. I followed the pre and post-op diet to a "T". and I still managed to have problems and had to have my lap band removed.

The first time I had a sweet was less then a month ago at my brothers house. I was on vacation...Before that none what so ever...I have decided after the holiday on Wednesday I will detox again and stop eating any refined sugar and get the job done.

For you, this is way to early to be doing that..Your sleeve is not healed yet and your staples have not formed a scar around them yet....You are at a tricky stage....

You miss food but, you can't have it. Down the road you can include a piece of pizza in your diet..But not yet!!!!

For someone not trying to be preachy, you are certainly doing well at it. I certainly don't think I know better than my doctor. I made an error in judgement and reached out to a support group for just that... SUPPORT!!!

Don't worry about it..You are going to fix it and already have a plan in place to get back on board.....think positive and don't look at what is said here as discipline like you are a child....Everyone has their own way expressing themselves..some can do it with ease..others not so good..But the intention is still there hun..To help you and let you know we are here to support you and look out for you...We are all worry warts here..you know....Like what was said above by McButterpants we are all in this together.....

You're right this is a support forum. You have a plan in place. You asked if this is a step toward a slide down a slippery slope, and the answer is "yes." It can start with one slip up You can search this forum and see many a person who says they stay away from certain foods because they are triggers or they feed an urge like carbs or sugar and then they lose control.

As ProudGranny said pizza is a hot topic on the site. I have seen posts ream people for eating something even when fully healed. I don't believe that one of us posting to this reply did that to you. Sometimes when you post you get an answer you may not like because it isn't what you want to hear.

When I was in the hospital an aide told me about a person who ate seafood too soon, came back through the ER and wound up dying so I worry about people who eat foods too soon. We are trying to be helpful and help you and give support. If that is preachy, it wasn't intended that way.

Did you purée it in the blender first. LOL?

I was sleeved the same day you were and according to my Drs plan if I puréed it first it would be ok =).

Honestly I can't imagine even trying....been having trouble getting my one ounce of puréed chicken down.

Best to you! Just pick yourself up and move on and let it be a one time slip rather than the start of a pattern.

I was four weeks out yesterday. We had a Christmas gathering with cookie decorating, gift opening, and four large pizzas.

I had four ounces of pureed chicken. I'm on regular diet now.

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
