Weight gain the first week?

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling frustrated. Surgery (banding) was the 16th. I'm not hungry and not eating that much but I'm still not below my pre-surgery weight. I've been taking the milk of magnesia (so things are moving). I'm struggling to get to 800 calories but I'm just so frustrated that I'm not even back down to surgery weigh in. Anyone else have this problem?

Many people have similar stories but this is not the time to be concerned about losing weight.

The first 30 days are a time of healing. If you happen to lose weight during this phase it's just a bonus!

Your body is recovering from the surgery. There will be a release -- for me it was on the fifth or sixth day. I gained as well but it's just the body adjusting from the anesthesia, the surgery, etc. All that inflammation. Don't worry and try not to be obsessed with the scale. Main thing right now is to walk as much as possible to get everything moving, release any trapped gas and kick your body into healing mode. Congratulations on getting your band! Don't look for immediate results as the first month is about healing -- but you're setting up the foundation for everything you will be losing in the future. Best wishes!

to gain actual true weight is to eat or drink more calories than you burn off/3500 calories is a pound/ate or drank)....have you done this?

the other posters are right.....you need to heal before anything else

and jumping on and off the scale will only make you nuts so stop it.....

you did not gain weight overnight and you sure wont lose it overnight..

its a day out and day in process....follow what your doctor told you to do for best results.........congrats on your surgery 4 days ago

Thanks everyone. I was not expecting a miracle weight lost type results post surgery, I just wasn't expecting to gain a few pounds from the surgery itself and for them to linger. I'm out of work for the holidays and seem to be obsessed with the scale. I'll try to stop that and just concentrate on healing. Still in a decent amount of pain. Heating pad on my back/shoulder and ice pack on the belly. I guess that's why I was hoping the scale to be below my pre surgery weight for some silver lining. Thanks again for the reminders and encouragement.

Kim, my temporary gain was quite a few pounds and then it dropped off me.....I still go up one, down two, up one, down three, up one, etc. But it all amounts to a steady loss over time. Relax and know you're doing great.

You probably just have excess Fluid weight gain. Your weight will drop off as Bandista said. Best of luck, tr to clam down. Back away from the scale!!You are in the healing process! Best wishes for your healing! Karen...aka..kll724

Remember your body heals by swelling and you had a lot of iV Fluid during surgery. My guess is it's just Water weight and your body needs to hold on to it to heal. Take everyone's advice it will take time but focus on eating smaller amounts of nutritious food and you can't go wrong!!! Good luck :)!!! I was banded 12-12 and I'm feeling great.. I'm no where close to 800 calories a day and have more energy than ever. You will be just fine as long as you let your body heal :)

Crystal - I'm actually barely managing 500 calories (most days I'm not even hitting that). I'm not hungry either. My doc recommends (per my general paperwork) to get 800-1000. I'm not sure how that is possible. :(

I'm in the same boat Kim... It's tough. Hang in there. It's hard when you're doing everything right and still not seeing the results. I've was stalked for several days and now have gained. I'm barely eating... And excercisibg. Doesn't seem scientifically possible. Hoping for a turnaround soon. I'm about 16 days out.

whether you like it or not, the first month you are healing...you are swollen, your not hungry and then you get hungry, trust me the hunger will return...NOW is the time to get your mind into the game........if you are struggling now, what will you do when it does slow down for real.......

ps: not eating/starving yourself doesnt work...eating good food in your band allotted amouts will, promise

I just had my surgery on the 18th and I'm not sure I'm even getting 500 a day....I'm just not hungry and hurting so bad I don't want to drink my shakes or broth, I just want to sleep.< /p>

I'm not trying to starve myself as I know that can't be good but with the dr liquid only restrictions its difficult to get my calories. The Protein shakes are 111 cals, broth is essentially free, Water is free, I've started adding grits as that's somehow on my approved liquid diet (it is watery) and that gives me another 100. I can't do aspartame or MSG and that limits me from a number of 'diet' options. I don't want to starve myself but I'm also not hungry and everything I am eating is fairly low cal.

I make a can of cream of chicken Soup then add a whole can of canned chicken breast. Purée in a blender and you have calories and a ton of needed Protein. I eat it in 2 meals. I have V8 as a snack. Low sodium. I am one week post op. the first 3 days I felt so weak, like I was going to faint from starvation. I don't know if I am the norm, but I was hungry right after surgery!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
