Not going to listen to that voice anymore.

The all or nothing thinking is my biggest foe. Tonight, after a hard, kinda awful day at work I got stuck in the worst traffic (rush hour, holiday, etc). I was so thirsty. I started thinking about how my job lends itself to self abuse. I never stop to pee. I inhale my food. I run from one emergency to another. I listen to and fix other peoples problems ALL DAMN day. It's my job. I signed up for it. But I'm sitting in traffic, thinking about how I think maybe a career change is in order- how little I prioritize time, energy for myself and I start to think how thirsty I am. And how Arby's is just RIGHT there. And how one coke wouldn't hurt , and hell, while I'm being "bad" wouldn't a Beef N Cheddar taste so good after this really, really crappy day????? Like, surgery is still 3 months away - why would it hurt to have a delicious Beef N Cheedar? Right? And then I resisted. I drove past Arby's and their deliciously BAD food, and I felt the thirst. I sat it the car and thought about thirst. What it physiologically means. What it's telling my body. And I told myself "YOU CAN DO THIS". And I drove through more traffic and past many more fast food places, and I finally made it home (2hours later). And I made my dinner, scanning every content into MFP. And I survived. So I'm going to Celebrate that one small victory because that voice in my head that says "go ahead, that's not a big deal in the scheme of things" is NOT. MY. REAL. VOICE. And I'm not listening to it anymore.

The End.

PS: I don't know how I could embark on this endeavor without this safe place. Truly, thank you.

WooHOOOOOO! You done GREAT!! Congratulations!

If you're caught without Water again -- which I bet you won't be after this, but anyway -- try gum or a breath mint. They can help a bit with thirst.

I am so proud of you and you should be too! This journey is full of those kinds of moments and what you chose was great. Sometimes, you may make a different choice and that is ok too because what you did tonight proves YOU CAN DO IT! Keep making good choices for yourself.

Congrats on getting past that "voice". I hear it too. It's like a little kid pulling on my sleeve that I can't get rid of.

Kinda liked being pecked to death by a flock of geese! Fast food is,has always been, my downfall.

Good for you! I'm glad you took the time to truly take care of yourself :)

Oh yes the voice! It still talks to me sometimes.. All or nothing?

I very occasionally get wooed by the voice and fall off the wagon. But the thing that I realize now is that I don't have to have the all or nothing mentality.

If I slip up one day it's only that day and doesn't mean an all encompassing feeling of failure and giving up.

Good for you!! That's a really big moment when you make a new choice in response to the voice & it should definitely be celebrated. Go, you!!

Congratulations! You have every right to be proud of yourself. I'm 3 months post op and if I could talk to my 3-month pre-op self, I would say the same things you just posted. I would also tell my pre-op self to never go anywhere without a bottle of Water in my bag and a packet of Designer whey Protein 2Go powder (my emergency snack option of choice). Find what works for you and get used to having that always (like a spare pair of reading glasses after your 40th birthday). :-)

I joined BariatricPal in 2008 & I FINALLY made the descision to have WLS!! I'm so excited & not sure what I need to do to get the ball rolling, but I made an appointment with my PCP for 7/19. It's a start I guess.

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
