Feeling not so Groovy

Recommended Posts

Well, surgery was yesterday at 730am. I was full of nerves but everything went well, no complications. Had a great staff. The problem has been the after surgery gas. I've heard some people on the forum complain a little bit about the gas and shoulder pain. I'm starting to wonder if they sucked out any of the gas at all. I have been in a lot of pain and I consider myself to be fairly pain tolerant. I've been eating my GasEx strips as instructed. And taking the phenergan (which has made me very sleepy). They did not prescribe any pain meds, said to take my Meloxicam that I already take, and maybe a Tylenol here or there. Still hurting a lot.

Also, I am on clear liquid diet till tomorrow. It's been rough. The juice and the sugar free popsicles are not doing it for me. They just leave a nasty sweet taste in my mouth. Beef broth has been OK. But I'm starving! My mom is coming over soon. Asked her to get me some WonTon Soup sans WonTons. Tomorrow is full liquids until Xmas Day. Looking forward to a Protein shake.

I hate whining. But I am feeling a little down. I was so gung ho and now I am riddled with doubt. I'm sure this is a natural progression. Did anyone else feel this way? I didn't expect to have such a rough time.

Congratulations!! On your surgery!!!

I had mine 11 days ago...I totally understand the gas in your shoulder. GET UP AND GET WALKING..that will help tons. I used a heating pad on my shoulder that helped out alot. Have you tried chicken broth? I made some homemade broth had a lil more taste than just the broth in a can. Jello..you can have that. YUMMY!! Your going to be feeling like a ROCK STAR in a few days!!

Keep us informed!!

Have a Mery Christmas!!

Yes the walking will help you out lots!! Warm tea is also good to sip, and try a heating pad or hot Water bottle on your back or under your shoulder for the gas pain.

Brush your teeth to get rid of that sticky sweetness in your mouth, it will help to refresh you.

The first few days are a bit rough, TLC and virtual {{{hugs}}} to you! Your doing great!

You'll be fine.....you just had surgery under full anesthesia...now you have to let your self heal and get back to normal...you'll be climbing the walls in no time....

For 2 days after my surgery, I became one with my Lazy_boy recliner, a warm comforter, in front of my flat screen TV....

The Mrs. made sure I had plenty of liquids....

I did not skimp on the pain killers either.....

Day 3 I had to get out of the house or I would go crazy....but i did tire fast....

One full week and I was back to work, and going to the gym....

This too shall pass.....

Sending best wishes your way! The walking was so important for me. I pushed myself and then my body kind of took over, like it knew what to do to heal. Get plenty of sleep and walk, walk, walk -- know that you're not alone. Now is the time to remember all the good reasons you are on this path -- what you WANT. Health and happiness! Know also you will be able to have whatever you want to eat....later. In smaller amounts and appropriate intervals but this lifestyle is not about deprivation.

Sometimes it feels good to just get it out, doesn't it? Walk, walk, walk to move the gas. I got lucky with this surgery, I had little if any gas discomfort. But a surgery I had in March? Yikes! Walking helped. Big time! LOL broth from canned Soup tastes so much better than straight up thin, nasty canned chicken broth. A heating pad for your shoulder can make you so much more comfortable. Hot tea with or without a little sweeter is comforting. I second brushing your teeth. Being on liquids made my mouth and teeth feel and taste funky and brushing often and using a good rinse really helped. :D

The first few days to week are the roughest. This too shall pass. And more quickly than you can imagine. Hang in there! You're doing fine and it only gets better every day. :D

I went through the same thing last week so I know how you feel. The pain is making you wonder if you did the right thing. Trust me the pain goes away and you'll get your strength back. You are doing a fantastic job. Just relax and let the healing process begin. I promise you it does get better. The hunger pangs you feel will go away. First and foremost just relax you just underwent a a major surgery.

Thanks everyone! I AM feeling much better today. Still a little gas pain but not as bad as yesterday. I had half of a Protein Shake this morning and took a shower and I'm feeling pretty good. And the big pity party cry I had last night with my hubby helped some too. We are gonna see a movie today. Get out of the house for a bit. Ya'll rock! Thanks for the support.

I'm glad that you're feeling better. Sometimes a good howl, a nice hot shower and a little something in the tummy is just what the doctor ordered. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
