After-surgery depression

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery this past Monday. Today is Wednesday, my first day home from the hospital and I feel really depressed. Did anyone else experience this and if so how did you deal with it?

OMG>... My surgery was 3 weeks ago today and I had a really rough surgery and recovery. (I was in the hospital for 4 days) When I got home, I balled my eyes out for a few days and thought I must be losing my mind. I did call my dr. because I have always struggled with depression (and am on meds) and he said it was perfectly normal and a lot of patients experience this. He also said it effects women of child bearing age more because it shifts the hormones in your body. It did get better.... be patient and lean on your supports.

There are a lot of reasons you are down..One you are recovering from major surgery. Two your body is putting all its efforts into rebuilding your system and cleaning out all the junk they filled you with when you were under and after, ex. pain meds...

Three, now is the beginning of a new era for you and fear and confusion and doubt start to play on your minds..Not to mention that you can't depend on one of the only things that brought you comfort...FOOD...This is a start of a whole new world and life for you...

Think of why you did this in the first place, write it down and read it over and over again...I know you thought and feel it was right for you or you would not have done it.....Then shake it off, look after yourself until you are healed and go forward in your journey....All that you are going through is what everyone feels at some point..K

Today is my 7th day since surgery. I have gone through an array of emotions from being angry with myself for doing this to questioning myself constantly. But today I found out one of my past supervisors died of a heart attack at age 35......yeah kinda puts things back in perspective. Hang in there and focus on the goal and feeling better. Rest, Protein and prayers.....that is where I am in this process. I can not allow food to continue to control my life.

I wasn't depressed post-op... I WAS PISSED! Don't know why, but I hated the world and wanted to fight, every day for the first week. :D

I was never a highly emotional person, but after surgery I found myself to be an emotional mess (Depressed, sad, angry, etc)! Didn't know what was wrong with me, but after reading some posts on this forum I learned that your body is being flooded with hormones (particularly estrogen) from the fat cells being broken down for energy. I was assured that this would subside after about 4-6 weeks and it did! Everything made sense to me after factoring that in.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
