What? Why would you do that? Not sure I understand.

I took FMLA to have my surgery. I was out for 3 weeks. I had to either use vacation time for the first week or no pay for the first week then was paid at 80% for the remaining 2 weeks I was out. Talk to your HR representative at work. You dont have to tell them why you are taking FMLA.

My job gives an allotment of sick days. I plan to use sick days and then vacation days if needed. I spoke to our HR Rep, and this is allowed.

You can take short term disability if you have it.

I'm using all my sick time then fmla. I plan on only being out for 2 weeks but fmla protects your job if you would need additional time off.

I run HR function for a large company, so hope I can help here. Short term disability plans vary in their coverage--check with your hr rep. Some will not cover time out due to an elective procedure. File it anyway--worst they can say is no. Regardless, if you are eligible for FMLA, you should complete the paperwork since it will help secure your job. Most companies require that you take existing paid time off concurrently with FMLA (if you have it.) You really don't owe your HR team a huge explanation beyond filling out their paperwork. Don't worry about being embarrassed though--trust me, we hear all kinds of stuff. Good luck!

I'm not sure about the disability checks. I got forms but didn't submit b/c I had vacation n sick time I used but the questions on the form made me think I wouldn't get it anyway.

I learned the hard way that I should've filled out my FMLA/ Short term disability forms prior to surgery. I only planned on taking one week of PTO and then was going to work from home until better. I ended up being off work 5 months. And trying to do that kind of paperwork in the hospital very sick was horrible.

Lesson learned:be prepared.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
