Did your psychiatrist do this?

Recommended Posts

So I had my psych eval yesterday and the psychiatrist kept trying to talk me out of Bariatric surgery, did yours? At the end she said she would give her approval, but I found her to be very rude. What was your experience?

Mine was all buddy buddy to me, got me to talk about my past, and then rejected me because I was an incorrigible, drug-addict hippy. Only thing was...that was in the 1960's for 2 years...been straight ever since.

My surgeon was livid..he said, "Who wasn't a hippy in the 60's?" He sent off a fax within minutes and got me approved. I am no longer a drug addict but I am still incorrigible according to my wife.

It sounds like your psych was testing your resolve and was seeing how motivated you were....you passed.

Mine actually went to school with my regular counselor and since my counselor and I have already developed a plan for my post-op mental health, she was pretty cool about it.

She encouraged more exercise and I went on my merry way.

Silly thing about the psych eval. Lots of people who need this surgery have disordered thinking around food as a matter of course. If you are "wily" about it, you could presumably give them the answers they want to hear. (I have a friend who did this; she is a recovering bulimic who did not mention it in her psych eval.) My husband, who has had some issues, was completely honest with the guy and was not immediately approved and had to go back. He was approved the second time. Why? I still don't know.

Take it with a grain of salt.

My evaluation was really different...i had to go 2 different times and the first session was 2 hours..I was only supposed to be there for 1 And the second one was 3 hours, I was only supposed to be there for 1..

She was concerned for me because I had gotten rid of anyone who had any medical influence over me at that time...She asked me how can you do this without help from the medical field..I said" they weren't helping me anyway."...

To make a really long story short..We talked about my past and she viewed it one way and I explained it another...she cried several times through our encounters....But at the end she passed me even though I apparently had made a grave error in firing my Dr. and Psychiatrist....

When I was in the hospital for those 5 months she came to see me a lot and we talked about life and dreams and just day to day stuff and she was always late for her next appointment..I really liked her!!!!

My Psych Eval was great..actually both times. (I had to switch insurances in the middle of the process and had to see another doctor).

I think you just got a rude person. Some ppl really feel like this surgery is the easy way out when they totally don't have a clue how hard this is.

Good luck to you!!!

She was Russian and I think culturally just a rude woman. I'm just glad it's done and she passed me

She is just a thin European doctor who had a lot of preset notions about Americans in general, she told me as much. I'm just glad it is over, longest hour of my life

My psych eval was pretty easy. I said all the right things because I really did know the material. ( I wasn't trying to snow anyone, just well read on the subject) I took a long written "test" for him and that sort of worried me. It was almost testing intellect. I thought "you have to have a high IQ to need bariatric surgery???" Anyway, this guy is published on the subject. I was sort of nervous due to that fact. ( that and I really don't like shrinks much) But when all was said and done I passed and it really wasn't that big of deal. I am sorry to hear you got "one of those" types with their preconceived notions. I don't believe she should be giving evaluations for weight loss surgery if she feels that way!

My pshyc eval was horrible the lady was overweight herself but kept saying why dont you hust diet and exercise. I wanted to say why don't you. She was very rude abd if I could just diet abd exercise I wouldn't be obese in the first place, its just not always that easy. Then my surgeons office tried to reach her for 2 minths because her evaluation wasn't clear to if she had approved me. I had to call her office manager to even get her to call my surgeons office back.

First glad she said that she would give the Approval. My psych eval was easy. The hardest part was going so I took my husband. In the end is was well worth it.

Yes she was a trip, she had me start at 100 and subtract 7 going backwards, now what that has to do with Bariatric surgery I don't know. She even questioned whether I would be successful with the sleeve bc 1) I haven't always been obese 2) I had Braun surgery in 2000 and became a chocolate lover following that surgery and gained all my weight following that surgery. She said the brain us an enigma and how do you know my obesity isn't in your brain.... Um WTH?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
