December post ops

Surgery 12/31/13. I'm so glad you brought this up. My skin is very dry. Then I dyed my hair last week and it's dry now also. I used the same product as always and it usual leaves my hair shiny but not this time.

I was advised not to do anything to my hair because it may start falling at out three month mark and to use baby Shampoo cause it's gentle!

Same here. Sleeved in September. Hernia repair in October. Sleeve to RNY conversion in early December. My skin and hair are extremely dry. They said that it is a direct result of not getting in enough fluids and Protein. My hairdresser said the same thing. Right now she has me doing an overnight conditioning treatment for my hair every two weeks. As far as my skin, I just use oils in the tub and good olé cocoa butter every night all over. I also treat myself to a bath ball from a store around here called Lush. They specialize in bath products. The one I get is called the butterball. It will definitely butter you up. If you don't have a store nearby they also have an online store. It really is wonderful. It is reassuring to know that I am not the only one.

I love the Fitness Pal ap! My surgery was Dec 18. I have lost almost 60 pounds and I am loving it. I did stall a bit around 5 weeks but got started on an exercise program and the scale started moving. I haven't had issues with dumping but did have a piece of food get stuck. It was really painful and I had to vomit to relieve it. It was because I didn't chew a piece of food enough. Now that my life, food and exercise is becoming more routine, I fell back into an age old habit of taking a bite while I was getting dinner ready for my family. It was definitely a painful but powerful reminder that I have a new body now.

I hate to complain about my new body but the Constipation is a real pain in the a... Haha. I have been using Benefiber on a daily basis because my doctor recommended it but I can't find a good balance yet. I have to use Milk of Mag at least once a week. I have also been losing a lot of hair, fortunately i have a lot of thick curly hair so it isn't noticeable but I realized it may be because I was taking my multi Vitamin 2x a day before food instead of with it. Lesson learned, read the labels.

I have a HUGE concern that I hope my fellow December 2013 surgery buddies can help me with.... I had my surgery 12/19/13 and since then I have only lost 25 lbs ! I put my beginning weight as the weight I was when I began the program in June 2013, I lost around 60 lbs in those six months before surgery and now since my bypass I am going NOWHERE !! The losses come in spurts where I stay the same for about 2 weeks then drop 5 lbs then stay the same and drop again !!! This is maddening ! I feel I HAVE to be doing something wrong. My Nuts. said we should have 75g of Protein a day and at least 800 cal. I am ALWAYS around 80g of protein a day and about 900-1000 cal. (She said keep it between 800-1200). I walk about 3xs a week. (I was sedimentary) and am increasing my exercise to include Water aerobics and swimming. Why am I not dropping the weight ??? Is it because I lost before the surgery??? I feel like I am doomed for failure, I have ALOT to lose and can't be petering-out already ! HELP !!!!

My doctor told me to exercise to build muscle because muscle burns fat. That has helped my scale move. Good luck.

Try miralsx it's clear and you put it in your Water . I mean it dissolves clear in your water and that way you get it every day!

You can actually put the Miralax in any type of liquid hot or cold. It will not change the taste or consistency. It really does help.

I am glad you are all posting on here more. I have also been only loosing a bit then nothing. I try and eat the 75 protien and i am too only getting maybe 800 cal. I guess it is better then going up but was so exciting to loosing fast to nothing much is kinda disappointing. I also have bathroom issues compared to before i had surgery. I almost feel like going back to liquids for a few weeks just to get a jump on the weight loss again.

Hi all,

I had my surgery Dec 30, 2013, so I'm not sure if I should be considered a Dec or a Jan post op. Anyway, I'm in my 7th week and I feel as if I'm losing slowly. I've lost between 36-37 lbs. Any advice? Are any of you eating Pasta? I actually had a close family member to tell me that she ate lean cuisines after her bypass surgery because she was able to know exactly what she was eating. She has done very well. It happens to be my mother! Most lean cuisines have a lot of pasta in them. Granted she would halfen the meals up and eat a portion for lunch and a portion for dinner. Sometimes she claims that she would just finish it in one sitting. My question is if you all feel if eating the lean cuisines are a mistake?

I have noticed my skin and scalp have become very dry lately. I am wondering if this has anything to do with my limited food intake (like reduced fats and carbs, not enough Protein, or possible signs of dehydration??), or if it is just a coincidence? Has anyone else dealt with this? I am about 2.5 months post-op (surgery 12-09-13).

Thanks!

Sara

Hi Sara,

I noticed that you are experiencing dry scalp and skin. it could be due to dehydration (not enough fluids), or have you thought of maybe it's the harsh weather conditions? Cold weather dries out our skin, scalp, etc. But I really believe that it mostly is from the surgery and maybe not enough fluids. I also wanted to ask you what you are doing to lose weight? Your weight loss is impressive. I had my surgery on Dec 30, 2013. So I'm not sure if I should be considered a Dec postop or a Jan post op. Anyhoo, I am in week 7 and I've lost only 36 lbs. Did you have your surgery at the beginning of Dec or what date in Dec? Did you ever seemed stalled ont he scale? I feel as if I'm not doing something right. I eat between 60-80 proteins/day. I have been much better with my exercising (I was sedentary before surgery). We have been snowed in here in GA the last couple of weeks, and I didn't exercise. I have heard many people say that they didn't exercise onebit and they still lost the weight. I do not plan on being one of those persons, but I wonder if you have to become a body builder to lose the weight! I just need some advice. I must be doing something wrong. Do you eat Pasta? I have been carrying lean cuisines to work, and many of them are full of pasta. I still watch my caloric intake, carbs, and sugars, as well as sodium intake, but maybe the lean cuisines are too much! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

LaDonna

I had my surgery the day before you and I've lost 40 so I think you are on track. The slower you lose the more time your skin has to bounce back. I had 90-100 to lose so people who have more might be losing faster. I have only eaten the lean cuisine garlic egg roll like things, they are yummy.

What did your nut say about Pasta? I eat potatoes on occasion but not a lot. I have a hard time eating enough to get my Proteins in on some days and I do not want a Protein shake! Yuck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
