multivitamins not helpful?

Recommended Posts

I ran across this article tonight and thought it would make for an interesting discussion:

Multivitamins are helpful for us so we do not become deficient, but....

What do you think?

The last paragraph says

"LaPook also notes that Vitamins can benefit people with certain conditions, like celiac disease -- where the body cannot properly absorb nutrients -- and pegnancy, where folic acid helps prevent birth defects"

well that includes us. We are taking Vitamins because our bodies may not absorb enough nutrients from food alone.

There have always been Drs that say vitamins are a waste of money. I lived my whole life without vitamins until I had surgery. I take them because maybe it would be a mistake not to.

Yup- I am a strong believer in Vitamins. Been taking my daily vitamins and minerals for 17 months now. I think they help above and beyond preventing deficiency.

I saw that tonight too. I think it'd be a gamble to not take them after wls. I know from experience that when severe PMS hits, extra B Vitamins make a big difference in how I feel. I'm still waiting for the Biotin to kick in and help my thin nails that were ruined by gel nails. I also pray it helps fend off Hair loss after I'm sleeved. :).

I am definitely advocating to take multivitamins as a post op. I just found this an interesting article that pushes the argument that Vitamins show no health benefits for a certain class of illnesses and that there are studies to back it. The studies are Most likely funded by the pharmaceutical industry.

Before my surgery I would have agreed that supplements are a waste of money. (and I have told many a patient not to waste the money on excess supplements) At 3 months my labs were terrible (every Vitamin level was low) I started taking double Multivitamin, extra vit A-B12-C-D, Calcium, zinc, Iron, magnesium and prescription Potassium chloride. My Breakfast seems to be a "pill feast" with the Protein shake to wash them down. I just had my 6 month labs and all my Vitamin levels are within the normal range! So..... I would answer the question about the worth of Vitamins after VSG as a definite YES they are important.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
