Why we eat what we eat

Recommended Posts

I know that sounds like a psychology question, but I mean that literally.

I'm pre-op (6 more days!!) but as I look at the post-op food that I'm supposed to eat, and the stuff that people talk about eating on the boards and I had a question. It's a lot of sugar free or low carb or fat free stuff and I'm wondering, is that for enhanced weight loss or does it have something to do with the sleeve and recover?. Can the sleeve not tolerate sugar or fats? I know that further out people talk about eating whatever they want in moderation, but not so in the weeks/months right after surgery (ie: fat free greek yogurt with sugar free Torani Syrup can you not just eat yogurt?). Not looking for a loophole, just trying to understand.

It depends and you will not really know until you get sleeved. Some people can handle sugars, some cannot. It seems to be general rule of thumb that most nutritionists suggest sugar free to maximize weight loss, plus as overweight people a lot of us very well have a huge sugar addiction. I also read somewhere that over consumption of refined sugar can slow recovery time due to inflammation.

My NUT said that we do sugar free do prevent dumping syndrome. Also to aid in weight loss. I haven't had a problem but am trying to consume less sugar to help in weight loss.

It's about what you can fit in. Protein first. Very very few Sleevers have dumping syndrome, since it is caused by a shortened duodenum. Lots of surgeons and dietitians use the same diet guidelines for the sleeve and bypass, which is a shame.

I had dumping with my sleeve from sugar free Torani Syrup at about 3.5 weeks post op. I also had one l small toddler bite of a plain sugar cookie the other night and had dumping from that.

Each person is different but in general like someone above stated ...most of us began as sugar addicts. It's just how our bodies were and they held onto each gram of sugar it could.

I aim for a certain amount of sugar per day and I am 8 weeks post op. I even limit the sugars that come from dairy. But that's just me.

I am one of the lucky ones who has not had any sort of negative reaction to any of the foods I have eaten. I don't make it habit, but I can do sugar. As a matter of fact I had a slice of cheesecake the size of my finger at a Christmas party Friday. Personally, I don't like all the fake sugar stuff, unless it is stevia or truvia. I generally get things with no added sugar and add stevia or truvia if needed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
