Foreign Travel after Surgery - How difficult is it?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am tentatively scheduled for February 11th but it could be later depending on my insurance's approval. My husband and I and some other family members will be going to Greece for 2 weeks at the end of June. Has anyone done any foreign travel right after surgery? What are the obstacles and what do I need to know. I will be either 3 or 4 months post-op. What kinds of things should I bring? Any advice, help or ideas would be appreciated. My husband just sprang this news on me last week so if I had known,post-194744-0-00838200-1387033676_thumb.jpg I would have attempted this surgery much sooner.

Thanks in advance.

I started traveling about 6 weeks after surgery. Just when I was cleared for all food. It was much easier than I thought. I have traveled at least once a month every month since. It really is not an issue. For me, I take some beef Jerky. I don't normally eat it because its high in sodium, it is great for travel to ensure I get my Protein. I also take roasted edamame. Another good source of Protein when you're not eating on schedule or have something that is not high in protein. In the beginning, I also took nectar Protein powder drinks to add to Water.

If you can get your surgery on Feb. 11th you will be almost 4 months and you will be feeling amazing!

Have fun!

I have traveled to India and to the US (from Australia) with no problems. The first trip to India was in July after surgery in May and it was easier than I thought, especially since I was eating a lot of new-to-sleeved-me foods. I managed to limit the rice and breads and ate lots of dal, channa, and paneer dishes. I'm in India now, traveling for two weeks in a Pune and Bangalore. 7months post-op and having zero problems.

So, do you still get as tickled as I do when I buckle my seatbelt and and have all this floppy extra seatbelt that I no longer need? I can't help but flap it back and forth for a minute while I'm sitting a seat that I no longer am squished into and with my legs crossed.

Sometimes, it's the little things. :)

Yep! I snapped this pic this time and already posted it elsewhere. Not only the seat belt but the tray table!

I travelled from the UK to the US at 6 weeks out and the only thing I struggled with was portion sizes ;-) You guys know how to eat!!!

I would check local food stuffs to see what you can eat and so that you know what you are eating. At 4 months out, you should have a pretty good range of things on your list so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Two years ago when I went to Greece I had trouble finding bottled Water. Athens was easy but on some of the small islands it is a bit more of a problem. And they served French fries with every meal. I hate French fries but that seemed to be the main "vegetable" they served. I am hoping that I will be able to eat real food by the time I get there as I know fish and salad will be plentiful. Indigo..you are right, we do know how to eat. LOL That's what got us in to this mess. I'm from the south and regardless of the occasion ..... we southern girls cook something.... and then we all gather to eat. Not a recipe for fitness at all. Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
