Constipation, BM and other embarrassing stuff

Recommended Posts

any suggestions on how to make things move on out? I know my body is ready to have a bm, but it just won't happen. Surgeon says to do enema. I can't be the only overweight person who can't "reach" to do that, and my pride won't allow me to ask my hubby to help. This is so embarrassing, but I don't know what to do.

I'm only Day 5 post-op, have been getting my Water in well, walking a little, getting along better each day, but I hafta go! Any ideas?

I had the same issue - here's what my NUT had me do...Take some Metamucil and a good quality pro-biotic. The pro-biotic, while not a laxative, will have a laxative effect and should help get things going. About an hour after I took both, I was moving right along.

I was at the 5 day mark when I called her and said I hadn't poo'd since before surgery - she was a little alarmed. You gotta get that poo out! :-)

I'm 4 weeks out and I still need assistance with the Metamucil.

Good luck!

If that doesn't work, try Miralax. It is tasteless and you can mix it into just about anything.

I used Miralax about 2 - 3 days per week and now I am using a stool softener whenever things slow down. I am 14 months out and definitely my BM's are still not regular.

Milk of Magnesia saved me from the enema - I still have it in the cupboard because things will "stop up" from time to time still. I really hate being this irregular, but it's a price we pay. Good luck!

I'm 4 days out,and I have the same problem. Hospital said narcotic pain killers are a big culprit. I am trying to keep the clear fluids goings, and stay hydrated. I'm walking. Starting yesterday, (once I was home and wiih Dr's. okay I started a stool softener, and a Gummy Fiber chew. I'm letting the Fiber chew melt in my mouth before I swallow it. I also moved to liquid Tylenol which seems to be managing the pain ok. Moving into the TMI category, I have passed some gas, and just a little liquid poo-twice. Labels said it could take 12 to 36 hours to work, so I'm just hoping. That's actually the cause of my worst pain right now. Good luck everyone.

I used Colace stool softener. If things are really backed up, I needed something else to help it along. With laxatives and softener she sure to get your Water in.

I've been taking natural vegetable laxatives. Wal mart brand. They work great, no cramping, no running to the bathroom, just a good ol natural bm.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
