Sick 6 days before surgery

Recommended Posts

I thought i was my sinuses being funny, but I started sneezing and have a little cough.

I WILL NOT MOVE MY DATE UNLESS I MUST! I've; got a 6 month insurance approval window and pushing to next summer (my only choice) would ruin that.

Does anyone know at what point they will deny you surgery? Temperature? Cough? Runny nose? (And I DO understand that this is all stuff only my doctor can truly answer, but looking for people with experience as well.

DOING:

1) Water WATER WATER

2) Zinc

3) Emergen-C

4) Sudafed (the strong kind) with an antihistamine

5) Guaifenesin to thin things out.

I'm hoping I can attack this cold head on and knock it down a few days. I have 5 full days to recover as best as possible. Do you think I'll be able to have surgery even with some minimal (if any) symptoms?

I'll be devastated but obviously don't want to make myself worse.

I think their threshold is a fever (as they wouldn't want to risk infection). Hopefully its just one of the quick bugs that have been circulating. Sounds like you're doing everything possible. sleep, zinc, and Vitamin C are your best weapons. Hang in there! We're with you!

You should be fine as long as you don't have a fever, I had a cold as well. Be sure not to take medicine with aspirin, as it will thin your blood and that's a no no for surgery. I pray you feel better.

Also make sure with your doctor that what you're taking to head of the cold is allowed. Mine is the 16th and I'm not allowed aspirin,NSAID's, Multivitamins and a long list of other things. Your doctor might not have the same requirements but it would suck to have to reschedule because you were trying so hard not to.

I'm down to three days to surgery and have a pretty solid productive cough. The antibiotics I was on for a sinus infection seem to be helpful. The snot and sneezing are over, but I'm worried if I cough up a wad of phlegm before surgery it'll be called off. Does a little cough (productive) ruin my chances? What's the worst case scenario if I go in acting healthy and have the cough after?

Then again I'm worried that I've "only" lost 8 pounds in 11 days and that I will get cancelled on for that.

I think the best medicine would be a big dose of chill the F out, rest and relax, and get sleeved.

Ahhhh.... Dealing with the same issue right now! I have not been sick in YEARS ... Until now. Coughing like crazy, pretty much no voice (it's the worst in the morning) ANNNDD surgery is first thing Tuesday morning. I've been rocking Mucinex, bought a vaporizer, cough drops, and have been getting plenty of fluids and sleep. Pray for me people! New insurance won't cover surgery as of January 1st so there's no time to push this back! What are the odds? Seriously!!

I am having the same issue. I haven't had a cold in almost a year & now that I am a week away from surgery I am coming down with a cold. I hope you get better & have the all clear for surgery. My surgeon told me to call him the day before if my cold isn't gone.

A lot of ppl get sick prior to..I don't know if it's the stress or a coincidence, but just remember..take Med's with no aspirin or antihistamine in them (thins the blood) it's a no no a week before surgery. Drink hot totties w/Rock N Rye (that really helped me) plenty of sleep & OJ..

Prayers up ppl...I'm almost 2 months Post Surgery and I'm loving my sleeve. Good luck everyone.

OK. So no more snotty nose and a I occasionally have to clear my throat but no cough.

Only thing, and I don't think it counts, my temperature is 99.4.

Any thoughts?

I think you will be just fine. The no aspirin and such is very important so keep NO secrets from your surgeon.

If you cough post op, keep a pillow or hold your stomach with your hand. Helps a lot! If they give you an abdominal binder, even better! You can buy one if one isn't provided.

Wishing you an Uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
