Hello,

My wife and I are new to this site, I found it last night. We are both considering the Band. I'm 31, 287 at 5'-9". I've been battleing my weight ever since I can remember and I hate it, along with sleep issues, and hypertension. I tired the Atkins diet and it worked, but as soon as I got off the band wagon, it came back on. My wife is kinda in the same situation. She's tried the Weight Watchers stuff and other things like diet pills, but she like I, it comes back.

We are both nervouse about the band, more her than I. I've read a lot on here about the issues with the acid reflux/indigestion. Is this a problem that can be handled with the right diet, or is it an issue that ever one goes through?

We go tonight for our first visit and to ask a few questions. Any words or help from the pros would be welcome.

Awesome site!!!!

Welcome to LBT! We are always happy to have others join us!

Regarding acid reflux...I suffered from this for years and was on a daily prescription to control it. Since about a month after being banded, it stopped. No pills, no problems. Not everyone suffers from it after being banded but some do. There is really no way to know ahead of time. In my opinion, the surgery benefits are well worth the acid reflux. They do have good meds out there to take care of it.

Best of luck to you both! Keep us posted!

If you are in Houston, you can visit Dr. Spivak too. He offers free seminars. That is who banded me about 5 weeks ago. No regrets. He does a fantastic job, actually has a personality and will answer your questions. You will choose who is right for you, but I am selected Spivak because of his experience and expertise in laparoscopic surgery.

You can search through many threads regarding the surgeons in the Houston area. A lot of shared experiences to learn from in this forum.

Wish you the best. :-)

I chose Spivak because of a lot of reasons... I went to his seminar and was completely impressed with him.

I have 4 friends that have used him from here at work.

He was the first surgeon to perform the lap band in Texas.

He won't operate on any Tom, Dick or Harry. He doesn't seem to want to just cut everyone open.

I have met Spiegel and was not impressed with him. I am not trying to sway your decision... but I would not let him touch me with a 10 foot pole. That is just my opinion. I have a dear friend that he really screwed up and I am sorry, but I can't respect a surgeon that does the things that he does.

A lot of people claim he is an excellent surgeon, but the one person that I know he operated on, would beg to differ. A lot of people say he doesn't have good bedside manner... well I wouldn't know personally, but again, my dear friend loathes the man.

I sincerely wish your wife and you the best of luck in your decision. Just research as much as you can... and talk to some patients of his that have had it done.

:welcomeB: To LBT!

I to had problem with acid reflux! I started taking Nexium a few years before being banded. I now have no acid what so ever!

My husband and I both were banded my Dr. Erik Wilson in Houston TX. He to has free seminars, and you can get all your evaluations done in his office.

He is a great doctor and his staff is word class. We love that we get to go our follow ups/ fills at the same time. Dr Wilson REALLY cares about his Patience's, and takes his time with us, and listens to all our concerns.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
