1 week post-op foods

Recommended Posts

Those who are currently one week or so after LB surgery, please post items you are eating. I have a list of liquids and creamier liquids but just need some brands, ideas, etc so I know it's ok.

Currently 5 days after and I have Water, very little milk with Ensure High Protein Shake, maybe two bites of sugar free Jello and I feel full.

This morning I felt the first official feelings of being hungry since 12/6. I sometimes forget when I wake up and catching myself thinking I'll make eggs and toast. I also get really thirsty if it's hot in the house and then realize I can't just drink a bottle of water.

Of course it's important to adhere to your doctor's post-op protocol and it's fascinating how that can vary so much -- but post-op I really enjoyed Imagine brand potato leek Soup (comes in a carton and is in the natural food section of our regular grocery stores). I also had chicken stock which I dolled up with ginger, garlic, tamari and chili to make a spicier broth. My surgeon had written down Egg Drop Soup and I had that, too. Always in pretty small amounts as I'd get full quite quickly. And I guess I wanted those savory things. On the sweet side I enjoyed popsicles, especially MinuteMaid brand soft lemonade. They have sugar in them rather than artificial sweeteners which I do not like. Calorie intake is so low post-op that it didn't really matter to me whether I was having 70 calories vs. lower.......

I was prepared for a return of hunger which did arrive -- I think this is different for each person. I am at five weeks now and have had two fills. I'm so happy -- and the walking helped with everything: the happiness factor, the weight loss and speedy recovery from the surgery.

Best wishes and happy holidays -- what a great gift to yourself!

Thanks so much. Sorta at a loss but love the ginger, etc!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
