I want to have the LB surgery and have done all my research. I've decided to go to Mexico. My DH and grown children and giving me a really hard time and think I am making a big mistake. They say that I'm one of those people that "if it can go wrong...it will" and they don't want anything to happen to me. I'm not scared. I'm excited about this. However, I love my family. What can I do to make them see things the way I do?

Thanks for all your support.

Shirley I am sorry you are having to deal with this. Sometimes it is difficult for our loved ones to understand exactly what we are going through and why we feel we need this. My dh wasn't thrilled about it so we spent a year researching it and deciding. Now, he's as big an advocate for it as I am!

It sounds like your family is scared that something bad will happen and they will lose you. Dh was the same way. I had to make him understand that the chance of that was FAR greater if I stayed like I was then if I had the surgery.

My advice, sit them down and have a true heart-to-heart with them. Don't hold back. I don't know if any of them struggle with their weight or not but make them understand exactly what it is like for you. Your fears, your pains, your hurt, everything! My dh doesn't struggle with his weight so I had to make him understand. It took a lot of long talks, lots of tears and lots of trust.

Good luck to you. I wish you the best. Please keep us posted on how everything is going.

Thanks for your insight and support. I have been having some very lengthy discussions with my DH and he is coming around (but still scared for me). My daughter won't even talk about it. She's a surgical technician and thinks that only American doctors and hospital know what their doing and are clean/sanitary. Again, thanks for your help!!!

Anytime. I had my surgery in the states but I know several people on here have had theirs in Mexico and are doing great. Everything that I have read about it has been positive! Search around, I know there are threads about banding in Mexico. If you can't find one, ask about people's experiences. They could recommend a good surgeon to you!

What are the reasons you chose Mexico? Was it a particular Dr. you researched on, or what led you to the choice you made?

The only thing I can say is maybe you could find a local Surgeon or support group where they can hear real live stories of the successes and the trials of the lapband. I think they would change their minds. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
