Tastes Of Food? Better Or Worse?

Recommended Posts

After my Psych Eval, the Dr. got me thinking about things that hadn't crossed my mind before. So I'm curious if anyone has an answer or two from your experience post-op.

Has the Flavor of food improved or gotten worse. For example, Does Jello taste the same post op or no. Do the foods that you once enjoyed pre-op hold no flavor to you now post op or taste nasty.

I know its an odd question to be asking, but I like to think this may be a question that other people haven't thought of and are wondering too.

Once you get past ketosis (Google it) and are able to eat anything and everything, nothing changes with your taste buds, though I do feel sweets are a bit sweeter, but that is a good thing. It just takes time, but everything does return to "normal".

food does not taste as good to me after being sleeved as it did before. I used to love French fries and Cookies. Now I don't care for either. My sleeve will tolerate them. I just think they taste gross.

food doesn't have the same hold over me as it did pre-op. I loved all food especially the bad for you foods. Now I don't like fried anything, french fries just don't taste as good. I love all meat doesn't matter lean or not, i love chicken, ribs, steaks, brisket, pork. I was not a huge meat eater before I could have done without.

I guess now if it's going to take up such a small space an I only get to eat/enjoy a small amount it better be really really good!

This has been said in many other places, but for me the taste of certain Protein drinks post-surgery has been distasteful, when I could handle them just fine before.

I agree with most here that most everything tastes a little bland for awhile. The only big difference that I have noticed is that I used to love tuna fish and now it makes me gag and I wasn't a big fan of chicken before but now i crave it!!

I am the same way! Used to love tuna, salmon, basically all fish now one little smell of it and I gag! Chicken will make me cringe but I force myself because it is so high in Protein and you can do soo much with it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
