5 Week Post Op... Band Fill Question For The Newbie

Recommended Posts

I am beginning week five of post op ... I am supposedly able to eat solid foods (regular diet), which I have started. My question is what does the first fill experience feel like?

Also, I am having problems with old habits coming back. I started at 320 lbs. and am now 289 lbs. I have made good progress and don't want to lose it... need advice and helpful hints.

Wow! you're doing great! Can't remember 1st fill. But, after each fill, my surgeon requires 2 days clear and 2 days full liquids! I know that is drastic, but did not kill me. The fill is usually just a small needle and my surgeon numbs my port. A lot of people tend to get a great amount of weightloss immediately after their fills. You might feel a bit of restriction, depending on how much a fill you get. Usually you don't get to green immediately, tho'. Best wishes. Karen...aka..kll724

Hi there, I am at week five, too! I wrote a post about my first fill last week but I'm not computer savvy enough to find it for you. First of all, I had the same experience of hunger returning. At first post-op I wasn't hungry and so now I know what the band can do for me. Love that! But the hunger did return maybe at three weeks -- varies greatly for people. Some are hungry right away so I think I was really lucky.

I went for my first fill last Wednesday and will go back this Wednesday for a possible second fill. Basically it went like this: connected with the surgeon again (I like this guy a lot), went over the return of hunger and how I had one slime throw up episode, what that was like (ate too much too fast of course), then he had me lie back on the table, felt around for my port (they only use fluoroscopy if there's a problem), cleaned area with alcohol, gave a shot of painkiller that just pinched a little, no big deal. Then he was giving me an arm to sit up and I said, "what about the fill?!" He had already done it and I didn't realize it because it was so quick and easy and we were chatting.

If it's sandwich-y stuff, how about just open it up and eat the Protein out of the middle. Chew a lot and take your time. For me, that is the problem with eating on the run, the loss of focus and potential for forgetting how important it is to go slowly.

I had a Quest bar for "brunch" today (I'm not hungry in the mornings). 20 grams Protein, not too bad tasting. Very filling, however. Probably should have stopped short of finishing it. Finishing is not the goal, that's for sure. Nor is fullness.

Until you get the adjustment(fill) that gives you restriction this will be a diet for you. There really are no tips other than try to fill up on healthy foods and stay away from slider type foods. Eat Protein first and then veggies and then carbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
