Are Protein Shakes Necessary?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks post surgery. I went to my doctor for my 2 week post-op visit and my doctor told me that I didn't need to drink Protein Shakes anymore. He said that I need to get my nutrition from food. He doesn't want me to get my calories from drinks. I hear a lot of surgery patients talking about still drinking Protein shakes so I'm just wondering. Are protein shakes necessary for recovery?

Protein Shakes are a good way to get your Protein in if you are falling short. It's hard to get in 60g-80g protein when you have a super small tummy after surgery. A friend of mine drinks 1 Protein Drink in the morning Premier Protein (30g protein) and gets the rest of her protein in from regular meals. You don't want to live off Protein Drinks. But sometimes you do need help in making the quota of however much protein your doctor wants you to get.

Follow your surgeon/nutritionalist instructions.

My personal view is that protien BARS are much more "dangerous" as they tend to be high carb and sorta have a candy like feeling....tend to trigger me to overeat which Protein drinks DON'T.

I still consume, 2 years out and 160# lost, a Premier Protein every day - sometimes 2.. 30 Grams of Protein, very low carb and just 160 calories - a real protein "Bargain"

Protein Bars contain really crappy protein....very processed and not bioavailable as a good whey protein.....but why not eat real food....a cup of yogurt....a couple of eggs....some chicken....shrimp....crab....nuts....beans...etc....

most protein shakes still have sugar and other yucky ingredients in them.....

My doctor also told me not to rely on Protein Drinks at my 2 weeks post op appointment. But in order for me to get 60 to 80 grams of Protein, I do drink a Premier Protein drink. I like Premier (name brand), because it has 30 grams of protein. Then I get the rest of my protein from the food I eat. Also, I have been at a stall for my weight for two weeks. I am riding it out and sticking to my protein and calorie plan. I am determined.

I still use Protein supplimentation and will likely continue to do so into the future.

BUT, the advantage of eating food is "saiety"... by filling your tummy your hunger goes down...

And when in doubt follow YOUR MDs plan... And IF anyone uses Protein suppliments, MAKE SURE they are of GOOD protein, have at least 20 Gm of protein AND LOW sugar content!!!

Not all Protein shakes or bars are created equal. I say find what works best for you. I definitely still utilize both shakes and bars, and I'm nearly a year out from surgery.

I like the Premier shakes (very popular here) but I also like one scoop (half serving) of the zero carb creamy vanilla by Isopure. Quest bars have also really worked well for me; basically because they're very high in Fiber.

Why would you assume I don't eat eggs chicken fish,Greek yogurt and other healthy protein sources?

Protein drinks are not necessary but have seen a useful tool for me to lose and maintain a great deal of weight. Premier is a quality brand, Syntrax nectar is also very low carbohydrate and sugar.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
