Dumping After Erosion And Removal

Recommended Posts

Well, the diarrhea has definitely subsided for today. My PCP told me three weeks ago when I saw him that he didn't believe I was experiencing dumping, but rather, withdrawals from the narcotic pain meds. (in all, I was on some form of a narcotic for close to two months after surgery). As time goes by and my symptoms get better I feel more inclined to trust his advice.

I did start introducing more Protein into my diet yesterday, mostly by way of a preservative-free beef Jerky from my local grocery store that I find is really gentle on my stomach. I snack on that all day, and drink a 30g Protein Rockin Refuel drink once daily.

There definitely seems to be a correlation between my protein intake and my sense of well-being. When I was on TPN, I was infusing about 140g of amino acids daily.

When I think to do it, I like to aim for 100g of quality protein by mouth per day, with >80g being a realistic goal.

My fundo relaxed a bit, to the point that I could belch all day today. Might seem pretty inconsequential I'm sure, but the lack of GI bloating/pressure has increased my comfort level astronomically.

Metagenics package is slated to arrive sometime tomorrow. With the cold weather we've been experiencing lately here in Arizona I took a gamble on the free shipping option. Plan is to continue taking in lots of protein, keep the diet as natural as possible, and start taking the Acute Care Probiotics once they arrive.

Yes, I hope it works for you too! I'm sure glad my surgeon mentioned it to try. I bet your internist could order it for you, special, if she doesn't already carry it. It might be less expensive that way.

Hiddenstar - I'm interested to know the ingredient in the Metagenics probiotics. I've taken Natren Healthy Trinity on and off for a few years, and found it to be pretty good. But I have silent reflux, and sometimes it's pretty bad. My throat will swell up during the night, and I keep swallowing (what feels like) a lump. A lump that never goes down, because it's actually swelling from acid. I get hoarse during the day because my vocal chords are also affected. My ear nose & throat doctor diagnosed it, and put me on Omeprozole. I don't think taking that drug for long periods is a good idea, because it blocks the absorption of some b Vitamins. I'd love to go a more natural route…like probiotics….if they work on it. I'm familiar with Metagenics, and have taken other products by them. But I haven't ventured out into their probiotics. Sounds like I may have to check it out.

HI!

It's not letting me cut and paste, so I'll include a link instead. The ingredient is S. Boulardii.http://www.metagenics.com/mp/products/ultraflora-acute-care

I had what felt like a golf ball and then tennis ball in my throat for 2 years, so I understand what you are talking about. My voice would get hoarse, too. The product I take, now, is around $35 a month. I have to get it shipped. But so very much worth it to me.

There is something about the S. Boulardii that is special. It's one of those things that may have been meant for one thing, but has been discovered that it's helpful with another.

I hope the info helps you.

Thank you so much! My internist sells Metagenics. I'm going to call tomorrow & see if she carries this specific thing. If not, I'll order it online. I hope it works the same for me!

I'll be curious to hear how it works for you!

Thanks hiddn! I'll let you know. The reflux has subsided somewhat since losing a chunk of weight, but it's horrible if I eat too close to bedtime. With the band, it's strongly advised that we don't eat anywhere near bedtime, but sometimes…..well, you know ;)

The thing that concerns me most about silent reflux, is the potential in developing cancer. My ENT told me when he diagnosed it, which is pretty scary. Though it's not common, it can happen. That's enough for me :o

That's enough for me, too. I had a bad reaction to reflux meds, so I'm especially glad this particular probiotic works for me.

My acupuncturist told me that often it's not too much stomach acid, but too little that is causing the problem. He said the human body is very sensitive to what is put into it. If there isn't enough stomach acid to digest what is put in, then the body either tries to send it back up and flush it down and out. So, some people try to increase their stomach acid rather than decrease it --based on that theory.

Im really tired right now, so may not be explaining it very clearly.

Best of luck to us both!

Just thought I'd pop in and post a quick update:

The new probiotics seem to be working really well. My motility is good, and I'm less gassy(which I also attribute to being able to burp again). The only side effect I've noticed is that my poop has an unusually strong stench, but I feel pretty good overall.

Has anyone else experienced the stinky poop phenomenon while on a probiotic regimen? I take this to mean the bad bacteria is getting evicted, along with whatever other nasty stuff was residing in my gut...

Check out Swanson Health Products for their full line of supplements and Vitamins. I buy my Probiotics from them and have been successful with them. Their prices are wonderful. My nutritionist also advised me to up my Fiber intake with Citricel and naturally derived Raspberry Ketones, African Mango. and L carnitine. I am committed to not putting back on the weight that I have lost!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
