I Have A Question About Soft Food

Recommended Posts

So this week was my pureed week and next week I can gradually work in a few soft foods. Tender and moist fish is on the list. Does that mean I can bake a salmon or tuna filet in the oven or sear it in the skillet? Is that considered a soft food? I hope so

I would say no. This usually means tilapia, orange roughy, cod and the like. Salmon and tuna are my faves, too...but they are not anywhere near the soft and moist category, I'm afraid.

oh. well tilapia works too. I just want to be able to bake it in the oven or in the skillet and not have to mush it up or puree it. I wanted to make sure that was what "soft food" meant. I will wait on the salmon for awhile.

Oh definitely! Mushing up fish would be DISGUSTING!!! LOL As much as I tremendously love fish, I don't think I could eat it that way at all.

actually, a salmon cake from fresh salmon, pulsed in a food processor with favorite herbs and pan seared is quite tasty!!!

canned chicken breast was a 'go-to' for me... very soft!!!

My practice had both tuna and salmon on the approved and recommended list for soft foods. Their requirement is that you be able to cut the food with a fork, and tuna and salmon both meet that criterion just fine.

I also tried salmon for the first time this weekend (at 6 weeks) and took small pieces with a bit of guacamole on the fork. Made it softer/moister.

Well there you go! Great tips! I despise salmon cakes, crab cakes and the like so I didn't think of that. Canned chicken breast was and is still a go-to for me, as well. For me, it would just require too much mayonaise for it to be able to pass through at such an early stage. If I'm not careful, at times chicken, salmon and tuna can be some of the more difficult things to eat even today at almost six years later. But everyone is different. If it works for you, that's awesome and I'm jealous! Let us know how you proceed and how things go! :)

Any suggestions for the "Creamy" stage? I move onto that tomorrow. Looking forward to some scrambled eggs with shredded cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese but would welcome any suggestions. Tired if this full liquid stage already. I'm post-op day 16.

Thank you in advance!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
