Hello All, My surgery is scheduled for Dec 19th (less than two weeks away). My NUT gave me a pre op diet that I was supposed to start on Thursday. My Dr. Gave me a diet to begin the day before surgery. I am having a hard time getting my thoughts together on going on the 2 week pre op diet. Any words of encouragement? Do I need to two week diet if my dr didn't prescribe it?

We have the exact same surgery date and it is MANDATORY for me to do the 2 week Pre-op liquid Diet, no ifs, ands or buts about it!

You MUST do the 2 week liquid diet. My NUT is part of my Bariatric Team and EVERYone is on board with what to do and when to do it.

The "day before surgery diet" that your surgeon refers to is just that~ to prepare your stomach organ for the actual surgical procedure.

The 2 week liquid diet is to shrink your liver so that it won't cover your actual stomach too much and make your surgery more difficult. Your liver could be injured if it is too big and has to "moved" out of the way for the surgeon to operate. You may also have to have additional or bigger cuts if they need more room. Your recovery would be more difficult too. :(

Are you drinking your liquids yet? lolol ;)

I'm not trying to scare you but you've made a HUGE life-changing decision~ so chin up, eyes straight ahead and GET TO IT!!

The very best of luck to you! :)

Your Dr and NUT are a team. Many of us have the two week diet and then the Clear Liquids the day before, so maybe do both.

Here's the deal. Doing the diet will (literally) shrink the liver and give your sugeon more roon to work inside you. A GOOD THING. And, if you can follow it (and do try hard) you will gain your first victory over fat! Yippee. I won't kid you, the first few days are hard, but it DOES get easier after day 3 or 4.

Lilrosie is right. Today is my 6th day on the two week preop diet which consists of 5 Protein powder shakes per day. It has not been easy but it gets better.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
