I'm being sleeved February 3rd and have mild reflux when I eat too much sugar. I really think it's do to my weight. I am wondering if people have experienced greater reflux from the sleeve, having not had reflux before the sleeve? Also thank you all in advance. I find these posts to be inspiring and very helpful as I journey toward my own sleeve.

I had pretty bad reflux before the sleeve and even worse refux after. I take Prilosec and a pro-biotic daily to control that.

When I had my sleeve surgery in July 2013 I also had a large Hiatal Hernia repaired at the same time. Prior to surgery I used Prilosec and always had problems. The day I had surgery I never had reflux again. This is one of the biggest joys for me about the surgery. I am 5 months now and I never have any issues. :D

I'm not asking advice on my sugar intake. I'm asking if people with mild reflux have experienced greater reflux after the sleeve, even after losing weight.

I'm going to give you the most precise answer you can ask for....

It's a crAp shoot.

There is no definitive answer or study to back it up either way.

Some with reflux still have it after, some will have it worse, some will lose it

Same goes with people that NEVER had it...

Some will get it after the sleeve to varying degrees. Some, it will still not be an issue.

Some bariatric Drs will not perform the sleeve on someone with bad reflux but really the reasons behind it are neither confirmed or denied by stats and studies..

Luck of the draw..,

I had reflux prior and had a hiatal hernia repair too. For the first week after surgery I didn't have much of an issue and didn't take my medication. Now, I sometimes get a little bit.

The answer was to go back on my PPI (I take Dexilant), and since I've done that I haven't had any issues. I was hoping to be off it completely; maybe when I've lost a little more weight I can experiment with it again.

I know a couple of people who had the gastric bypass due to them having reflux problem. And they said it went away. Some people actually do have reflux issues after having the sleeve. Just my experience.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
