Laura, I know about flogging dead horses, but help me out - what's the meaning of jumping the shark???? Sorry, not a phrase we use here but think I might if I knew what it meant... :-)

You didn't ask me but I will answer since I am online!

This phrase is used to signal the beginning of the end, it actually comes from the happy days episode where the Fonz waterski jumps over a shark. It is that moment where a turn is taken for the worse and there is really no return to the good old days.

If the OP requests it, we can delete or lock this thread. I have not seen anything rude but have to respect their wishes.

LouiseC thank you! All clear now, like the phrase so can use it without looking stupid and getting it wrong. I'd usually use "point of no return" but "jumping the shark" is way cooler :-))))

Once you've watched a 30 year old women fight for her life for months on a ventilator, overwhelming infection, multiple surgeries, only to lose in the end, because she ate half a chicken 1 week out, cheating is not an option. I've personally taken care of a few patients in the same situation, some lived, some didn't but it was a hard road either way. Why risk that?

Thank you for sharing that! I've been doing so well post-op, my stomach is digesting things well, I'm not in any pain, etc. that I was thinking about talking to my surgeon about going a little faster through the post-op diet phases, but now I won't even bring it up! I don't want to put the idea in his head. I'll just keep cooking for my family :)

Why to make the dead horse run faster, of course!

We are at the point of jumping the shark here..
I think the points were made.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the horse is dead why keep beating it..

I am 3 1/2 weeks post op. I stuck to the pre op liquid phase and the 2 weeks post liquid without any issues. My first few days on soft foods was a little tough, but improved quickly. I now find myself eating foods that are not soft, I just chew them till they are, I eat small amounts of what everyone else is eating? The amount I can eat is very small. I need to eat a lot slower, when I know I am full there is still some on the way down, and this is very uncomfortable. I have no problem drinking loads of Water or my Protein Shakes. I have an appointment with my dietitian in 10 days, but after reading this thread, I am thinking that what I was seeing as progress is really cheating, and I should be a lot more carful with what I eat. I am down 40 lbs pre and 27 lbs post and am feeling great, but don't want to screw up and have any health issues from eating the wrong thing. I zero regrets in having my sleeve done, and believe that this is the start of a healthy life.

how do I delete this thread? I feel like Im in elementary school & Im standing in the corner.

Yes but I suspect you are not as alone in that naughty corner as some here would have you believe. You know what I cheated on? I never got no "Psych Eval". I figured if i did they would have refused my legitimate request to have 80% of my stomach removed. Or maybe they wouldn't have. Do I sound paranoid?

Mississippi Queen,

I know I might get jumped on for this, but I skipped to full liquids a few days early. I was getting faint from no calories so started on Protein Shakes. I spoke with my NUT afterwards bc it was on a Sunday and she said it was ok. I'm hoping she moves me to mushy foods tomorrow. I really want to see what she says. I know their program is very general based, but I am hoping we can talk about me and not just the standard program. I am able to tolerate liquids very well. Since they go through me quickly, I do find myself very hungry at times.

I want to follow their plan and have intentions of it, but like tis past Sunday, I knew my body needed some Protein, so I went ahead with the Protein Shake. I don't think it was cheating, more listening to my body. I had only half and took it very slow. Then I spoke with my team.

I think it is fine to know our bodies, and work with our teams. Sometimes the standard program needs to be adjusted and that is why we have access to our nutritionist. I'm sorry you feel beat up. I do think there are strong opinions on here, which is great, but could also make some peoples to join in if they do not have the same experience.

I'm just hoping to listen to my body, work with my team, heal, and make the best choices I can. In conjunction, I'm working with a therapist and overeaters anonymous to work on my addiction. It is definitely a multifaceted recovery process. Just being aware and trying our best I think is important.

I cheated (if it makes you feel any better)! I am on mushy and soft, and I had half a piece of pizza - I chewed that sucker till it was practically Water, though, so in the end, it really was just mush :) Then, BY ACCIDENT, out of habit, I grabbed a handful of popcorn when my kids made some for a snack. I literally wasn't even thinking (just goes to show...) so I didn't chew that as well at all, but now I am sitting here worrying I caused a leak. So I am trying to get back to being vigilant.

ten days post op your stomach is still very numb and swollen... Please be careful as to what you eat because you may not "feel" much until it is too late.. There is a reason why they have you measure and weigh food and eat the appropriate types of food :)

Laura, earlier you brought up "Dead Horses"

As a government executive, I need to elaborate on my earlier thoughts:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
