Let's Get The Duodenal Switch People Together

Recommended Posts

The DS was my first choice, I just wasn't able to make it happen with insurance (plus my doc has concerns about previous intestinal surgeries), etc. I've opted for the sleeve for now since I see a lot of people succeeding with it, and I'm going to work it as hard as I can but I still keep one eye on the DS world. It's comforting to know the "other half" of the surgery is still an option later if I need it. Best of luck to everyone who is getting switched!

Welcome Mommabearn,

Congratulations on making a good choice. Who will be doing your procedure?

Hello, I had the D.S. procedure done 4 weeks ago tomorrow. Spent a few days in the hospital, had a great deal of discomfort which is to be expected. Once I got home, had an issue with lactose intolerance, my NUT had me switch to pureed foods which helped and now to date I've lost 41 lbs. Next weekend I will be allowed to start soft foods.

All in all, it's been a positive experience.

Not necessarily. It's the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch that's done nowadays. The biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) alone used to be done, but it turned out there were some really tough side effects to it.

Make sure you're talking about the BPD/DS (biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch).

Have you spoken with Dr Nottle? He's in Queensland, I believe, and is known for doing the conventional (not SIPS/SADI/single anastomosis) BPD/DS.

My problem is that I have maintained my 120 pound weight loss but want to lose more and don’t know how to do it in a healthy manner. I am open to any good tips on how to take off weight. Will eat nothing but shakes if it will keep me healthy. Also want to continue working out. Any help please!!!

i had vertical gastrectomy with ds and shortened common channel about 13 years ago. I have maintained 120 pound weight loss but want to lose. My bloodwork is very good. I now have two new knees and two reconstructed feet since weight loss so I exercise too.

Suggestions please!!!

@MardellShakes are definitely not the way to go for a DSer. Yes, you can use them as supplements but not as your entire menu. Your best bet is to eat a ton of Protein. Then drink a lot of liquid and limit carbs severely.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
