Quitting Smoking Before & After Band

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to know if anyone else was or is still a smoker. I have to quit a month before surgery and after reading some of the paper work given to me from my surgeon looks like I should never smoke again. I have been a smoker for about 15 years so quitting has been rough. Through out the last six months I have tried to quit but then after week 2 I went back to smoking. Just wondering if anyone else was or is going through the same thing.

I quit about 3 years ago, this is when my weight went out of control (way before band). I used Champix (called Chantix in the USA) and LOVED it. I still miss smoking but it is an awful habit, so I will never go back. Good luck, I know it is hard! I smoked for about 20 years uggh!

i'm an a on and off smoker. for over 20yrs. i hadn't smoked for almost 11mts before the surgery and then about 3 wks ago.. life in general was well CRAZY that i relapsed.. that didn't last long i could see how much the chemicals messed with me i was retaining Water like crazy - felt like crap..

all i can say for giving up.. it's a one day at a time for the rest of your life.. least that's how it is for me. every day i wake up and decided. usually for the best..

It is most certainly the right thing to quit before surgery.. it can really mess with how you heal. and i talk from past experience :( . I know it's easy for other folks to say just quit.. it's a drug and an addictive one at that you just have to want something more than that smoke....

best of luck i hope you find something that works for you

I hate to admit this, but this forum is about honesty and helping each other. I am a current smoker - before the surgery and still today, 5 1/2 months later. I tried to quit, but my life is hectic and too many life changes at once didn't seem like a good idea at the time. I know, neither is/was smoking. However, as any smoker knows - this is a horrible habit and once you pick it up it holds on for dear life. That's neither here nor there. But to answer your question, I haven't had any adverse affects from smoking but I have cut down a lot - the desire is just not as strong as it was before the lapband.

WE have to stop smoking. It is imperative. Being a smoker, I understand that it is easier said than done...but it can be done.

Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. I'm hoping I can stick to this but I completely agree this is a very hard habit to quit!!!! And of course I'm sure you all would agree when you are hungry sometimes smoking can curve that so I am trying very hard now before my surgery not to pick at food when all I want is to smoke. I'm going stay on this track til at least my surgery so I can heal properly and hopefully HOPEFULLY never start again!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
