My Surgeon Doesn't Require A Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I hate to change get off subject but what are some examples of slider foods?

For me slider foods are everything that we all love. LOL!

Cookies, chips, ice cream, candy, pop corn, frappachinos. My new stomach is so weird, it loves the bad stuff and in a lot of instances can handle the bad stuff better than the good stuff. Ironic.

Yes there is a tool. I met with my surgeon yesterday. He asked which one I was specifically asking about And rattled off a few different ones. I just wanted to make sure he uses the latest technology. He said he doesnt require a preop diet because hes never had a problem during the 3000 bypasses he's performed. And hes done patients with bmi's of 100!

I don't think there is a tool or any such thing. Pre-op diets are to shrink the liver if enlarged which is easy to find with liver function tests. If they are normal you don't need a pre op diet.

I don't know you.

I know what you wrote.

You wrote "I don't think there is a tool or any such thing"

THAT IS WHAT YOU WROTE.

So you don't THINK there is a tool or any such thing, but now you say that you understand that there are "separators used."

Please don't confuse people with your double talk.

There is a tool. My surgeon uses it. Period.

End of discussion.

It concerns me that a surgeon would set an expectation to "never feel hunger again". My hunger returned about 7 months post op - I am two years out now. I do not have that 24/7, all consuming, drive to eat hunger that I did pre-op, but I definately experience hunger and I think most sleevers do.

There are many tricks and tips to managing that hunger so you can get to goal and stay there, but I think people need to go into this with the real info.

As far as preop diets, I didn't go to medical school so i picked a good surgeon and did what he told me. Does it really matter what others do? I had a 2 week liver shrinking diet but they weren't overly stressed about it. It was tough as hell to stick to and I can only imagine how hard these really long preop diets are. When they do the long ones, I think they want you to get weight off to sorta prove you can be compliant... well... that theory didn't work well for me. I am a compliant patient, butI needed the sleeve tool to acheive that.

My surgeon simply stated that many of his patients never experienced hunger again which is an observation, not an expectation. You would be correct in saying it doesn't really matter what other's pre-op diets are, So does that mean we shouldn't share our experiences? What an odd statement to make.

My Dr. said that he will have Pre-Op Diet for those whose BMI is over 48. I am under 48 but was thinking about doing Low Carb High Protein diet the week before to help with recovery. Not sure though, might just have 7 last meals lol.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
