My Surgeon Doesn't Require A Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I was a little surprised when my nut told my my surgeon doesn't require a special pre-op diet. They want me to follow what I've been doing to lose my 5% with the nut, but other than that no all liquid or anything! Is it just because he's very experienced and a pioneer in the field and isn't worried about knicking my liver? I'm wondering why he wouldn't want to play it safe...

Although my surgeon does require a 2 week diet, it is not a liquid diet. You can drink 3-5 Protein Shakes, 6 oz. meat, divided into 2 3 oz. portions, unlimited green veggies, one fruit, and a yogurt a day. Is this similar to what you are eating now?

Every surgeon goes with the system that works for them. Plus, it's kind of a catch 22 - I couldn't lose weight because I couldn't stick to a diet, but I have to go on a diet to lose weight so I can have the surgery to lose weight?????????!!!!!!!!!

Teachamy, I'm having a hard time not eating everything in sight at the moment. It's how Ihave always prepared for restrictive eating to come:/ Joatsaint, I hear ya. I wouldn't be having surgery if I could do it on my own! Did you eat anything you wanted up until surgery?

Sleever427, thank you for posting this! I was having the same thoughts. My doc didn't prescribe a pre surg diet either. My nut talked to me about how to eat, but more of an in general situation. concentrate on Fiber and Protein. cut back carbs severely. keep caloric intake within 1500/day. be accountable for what I put in my mouth. stay away from empty calories. Outside of these things, I've been given nothing else. Are you getting your surgery at Lenox Hill in manhattan by any chance?

My surgeon did not require pre liquid diet either. He required high Protein and low carb and sugar. He said he doesn't want his patients miserable and since I had to be on liquids 2 weeks post op he said his patients seem to do better and not cheat after.

My doc didn't require a liquid diet either. Just a fairly restrictive. No fats, no fried foods, lots of Protein and a few green veggies. I had a great surgery and recovery.

Redwillow, Those are good guidelines! I'm getting sleeved at Aurora Sinai in Milwaukee. Dr. Chua has done about 6,000 bypasses since the 70's. 0 fatalities and even invented a weight loss procedure called the vertical band. I know I'm in great hands. Branmuffin, I like it when a doctor takes into consideration that it might be a little rough to go that long on liquid only!

Same thing with my doctor. He said to just "eat as healthy as I could". And follow the liquid diet the day before surgery. I'm trying to do at least two shakes a day, and have a healthy dinner.

I didn't have a pre op diet really. My surgeon doesn't believe in getting nutrition through liquid. I had pureed food while still in the hospital. I'm two weeks out tomorrow and moved up to soft foods yesterday.

Sounds like the no pre-op diet is more mainstream than I thought!

My doc said no pre op..i did meet with a nut to go over the eating protocol after the surgery and the various phases of eating till I eat reg food. I did ask why no preop..was told only those that had to be a lower weight for surgery due to greater risks. My nut / doc does not want me to depend on shakes after I start eating regular foods either. (After 5 weeks of surgery) .

I'm more than a bit surprised. Again, I'm so glad you posted this topic because so many folks are speaking up. :)

Also, I was able to eat soft foods at 2 weeks out. ANYTHING that was soft.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
