Medicalert Bracelet-Yes Or No?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, do any of you wear a MedicAlert Bracelet after getting sleeved? I've heard that it's necessary to wear one so in the event of a medical emergency the EMT's won't intubate you and destroy your stomach.

Your opinions?

You could go that route if you wanted. I have a card that is supposed to sit in my wallet that has a diagram and name of the surgery on it. I feel that is sufficient for me though.

I asked my surgeon about this and he said that the only worry he had was during the first three months. after that he felt there was little risk and it was my choice. My GI doctor concurred so i have decided not to wear a Bracelet and advertise to world that i have some serious medical condition.

I wear one. I bought the medic alert charm and had it engraved with four rows of text. I then added the beads myself. I plan on restringing the beads and attaching with lobster claws so I can swap out different bands with it.

Here is a picture of the one I made. On the back side it reads:

On the back side it reads:

Sleeve gastrectomy

No blind NGs

No NSAIDs

List of medication allergies.

I have a medic alert 'dog tag' at the program's suggestion...

Gives my name, my surgeon's name and phone and:

Sleeve gastrectomy

No blind NGs

No NSAIDs

No Oral Steroids

I need something like a medical alert keychain. I don't really want a Bracelet or necklace. I do have a card like the poster above mentioned. It lists my surgeon and the type of surgery I had, along with a diagram of the procedure. (It also states I would benefit from child sized portions at restaurants, I guess some will honor with the card.) It goes in my wallet, the size of a credit card. But that only covers the sleeve, I am also a "lifer" on blood thinners. So I do need to find something to cover both, and that I will have on me all the time.

I have also thought about this but know myself and I would not wear a Bracelet or necklace everyday. I barely remember my wedding ring every morning. I think the card kept with the drivers license is a good idea for emergencies.

May be a dumb question but why no oral steroids?

I wear a RoadID. It's a specialty medical alert/identification system that allows them to see your current meds, meds you're allergic to/shouldn't have, your insurance info, emergency contact, and any surgical status.

i love it!!! I put the little ID things on my Shine Fitness tracker band. 2 in 1!! love it!

I can tell you from the standpoint of a sleever and a paramedic/ER RN. If I need to be intubated then they are welcome to go for it. I want them to do it! If it is done correctly no harm to your stomach will be done. The small risk definitely outweighs the benefits of life.

I got a very pretty necklace from Lauren's Hope website. I wore it for the first few months. I even got a lot of compliments since it didn't look 'medical'. Now 10 months out I don't think it is still necessary and no longer wear it. However it gave me peace of mind early out.

A suggestion would be a USB drive, which can have ALL your information, including pictures.

I know there are USB with the medical alert icons, and you can make it into a Bracelet or necklace.

Never thought about this before, I will have to bring it up to my surgeon on my next visit.

I don't wear one. I did bring it up with my doctor and he to said it wasn't necessary. Besides, I know I will never wear it. Kudos to those who do. :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
