Recommended Posts

I am struggling with the liquid diet! 7 days down, a week to o. I have support and people telling me I can do it and how proud they are. Which is awesome! But I think I need to hear from those who are in the thick f it wth me right now. Can relate to my struggle. Anyone else having a hard time? I'm hungry an my brain is fuzzy.

I have had to do month long liquids and it is tough. I think if you hungery maybe you could ask about having another shake durring the day. My Dr says that if the amount that has been givin we can take one more shake if needed.

Ohhh man. Mine starts this weekend but I have already tried it for a couple days to prepare myself and barely made it. Its NOT easy! One suggestion I can make is to get yourself some kind of Fiber supplement. Like the fiber gummies or a clear fiber drink mix (make sure its sugar free though!) I chewed a few to curb that empty stomach feeling and it seemed to help. The fiber will give you the full feeling and it will help clean you out at the same time so it will help even more haha :) GOOD LUCK, you made it this far don't stop now!!

My two week pre-op consisted of 2 shakes and 4-6 ounces of meat and 1 cup of vegetables daily. It sucked and I hated it.

I had days where I didn't think I could get thru - I think there were 2 or 3 days that I added another shake because without it, I was going to fall off the wagon and eat something totally off plan. I'd check with your doc or NUT to see if that's an option for you. Also, green tea became my go-to drink when I felt like I wanted food when I couldn't have it. I drank copious amounts of green tea.

In the end, you will find it's worth it. You will be proud of yourself that you passed that first hurdle of many in this long journey. This is going to help prep you for the weeks to come. Post-op, you will have different challenges, but you will still be on a liquid diet of some sort for weeks after surgery. You'll be ready because you lived thru the pre-op.

I'm just over two weeks post-op and I can tell you, I'm really sick of shakes - I still have to drink 3 shakes per day until December 30th when I have my next follow up visit. But, when I step on the scale or put on jeans that used to be tight and now are almost too big - it's worth it!

Sometime in the near future, when you're post-op, you'll look at this pre-op diet and think, "That wasn't a big deal." :-)

Wishing you the best and great success.

I am allowed 3 shakes a day- must get 65g of Protein can have sugar free Jello and Popsicles. And chicken broth. Plus 64oz of Water, crystal lite etc. I'm going to try the fiber. I think it will help with the full feeling

I just keep telling myself less than a week to surgery!

I feel ya...I get 4-5 shakes, Jello, popsicles, pudding, broth and vanilla Greek yogurt. I am sick of the cloyingly sweet shakes and all the other sweet stuff. It said I could have Tomato broth, which I have never seen, so I mixed 1/2 tomato Soup with 1/2 chicken broth and that isn't bad.

I cheated yesterday by eating a stalk of steamed broccoli.

I start the liquid diet on Sunday and have to do it three days before surgery. I am so nervous about actually making it through the three days! Hope to find some support and some friends on this site.

I don't think your "cheat" will hurt you. I start mine this weekend for a 12/17 date. Pretty much the same plan as you describe but was told a handful of non-starchy green veg (greens, cukes, broccoli, etc) was ok if you really needed something to chew. I experimented with mixing pea Protein into broths - it "creams" it up giving some substance and texture which is a nice change from the sweet stuff. Knorr makes a tomato-chicken broth base as well as shrimp flavor, which is a great change of pace to break up the monotony. I hope I make it through these next ten days... it's not going to be easy thats for sure!

Be careful with the broccoli! Gas is a HUGE problem after surgery. . Dont want to anything that could exasperated the problem.

I'm just about 7 weeks out and I can tell you the pre op was just about the hardest thing ever! It starts to get easier around day 4. Remember your reasons for doing this and remember it's temporary. This diet is not for weight loss. It's to shrink down your liver so that you don't have any complications or have to have open surgery. You got this!! Stay strong

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
