1 Week Post Op....concerns

Recommended Posts

So today is my 1 week post op. I have a few concerns.

  • I think I overdid it yesterday my Fluid in my JP drain doubled and is a deep DARK red. Previously it was a clearish and light red color. Should this concern me?

Could I have injured myself?? The only pain I have is still the larger incision where my tummy came out of.

  • I weighed myself and only have lost 3lbs this week? Is that normal?

Don't get me wrong, I am still very happy with my decision to do this surgery. But I am wondering if I am doing anything wrong. Everything I consume has Protein in it. I made treats protein filled too like my Jello and pudding. I just don't know what more I can do to increase my initial weight loss. My stomach I guess could be swollen by my legs are not....

Dark red blood is OLD blood. Your drain just found a new pool that was glopped up and needed to come out anyway. When its coagulated in the no-mans-land space your body has a harder time breaking it down and clearing it. I had a hematoma (big bruise) under an incision and the dark stuff actually forced its way out the incision one day.

It was probably worked free by natural movement, aided by your bodys own attempts to break it up.

(Im no physician, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night - check with your real doc if you're worried)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
