Alcoholic Beverages

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to get my band on December 18th. I start my liquid diet on December 11th. Every year, I host an Ugly Ornament Party for some long time friends and usually most people imbibe many spirits for the party. I will be on my third day of the liquid diet. I know I probably should not have a lot of alcoholic drinks, as they tend to be high in sugar and calories, but I would really like to have at least a couple of drinks. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a low calorie alcoholic drink that would be possibly "acceptable" on a liquid diet? Also, do you think the alcohol would affect me differently while on a liquid diet? For anyone with a band, what alcoholic drinks have you drank with the band?

You're talking the Pre-surgery diet????

My Dr. did not care if it was liquid or not....my only task was to loose a determined amout of weight or the surgery would be re-scheduled......just happens that a liquid diet is the most effecient...but I did eat regular food also.....BUT I was very, very careful what I consumed...did not want to screw it up being so close.....

Yes, pre-surgery diet. I go this Friday for a barium swallow and education. It is my understanding that I will be on a liquid diet for one week before the surgery (and also, one week after). No mention has been made about any certain amount of weight loss.

yes, i agree with missy here (yet again) sorry missy if i appear as a stalker of sorts...

but if in doubt with ANYTHING (drinking, eating, farting, sex, walking the donkey).....just merely call and ask your doctor........they will give you the answer you need for you :)

ps: why kind of ugly ornaments do you get? sounds like a GREAT party (idea).

Why can't you have the party without drinking? If it is that close to your surgery I would have some non alcoholic beverage. You don't know how long it thins your blood and that will put you at risk for a bleed or could possibly even cause a serious issue during surgery. I would say no because we all know that once you start drinking its hard to only have one.

Thanks for the reminders. I will ask about it when I go in for testing this Friday. Carolina Girl, every couple buys what they think will be the ugliest ornament, and we do a white elephant style opening of the gifts where you can steal, etc. I actually have a small tree just for ugly ornaments that we've gotten every year. This is our eighth year having it and it's always a blast! It always seems that some sort of hideous animal wins every year. Last year I bought a Snookie ornament and someone else had bought a Paulie D. (Jersey Shore) ornament. I got stuck with Paulie! Lol

My understanding is the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver so the surgeon can get install the band efficiently. Alcohol is not going to help shrink the liver. Maybe a party without drinking is good practice for a new lifestyle -- not that you can't drink once banded but that there are going to be times when you need to make a healthier choice. This may be one of those times! Good luck to you with your upcoming surgery. Very exciting new chapter beginning!

Totally agree… And with the drinking comes eating. Why even go down that road so close to surgery? This is a big step, and I'm sure you went through a lot to get to this point. Passing up a few holiday drinks is a very small sacrifice, for this huge life changing surgery.

If your physician says moderate alcohol is okay I would suggest scotch on the rocks. It's full flavored enough you won't be as tempted to drink it quickly. If your not a scotch drinker already get a small bottle of something on the more expensive side like Laphroig the bottle will last a good long time so don't let the sticker shock scare you off. After that I'd suggest bourbon just avoid the temptation to use it as a mixer or drink it in shots. My third choice would be wine but at that point it's harder to identify a specific bottle that you can enjoy without drinking too quickly due to personal taste. My goal would be to find a drink that I can enjoy sipping from a single glass for as close to 2 hours as possible.

If that doesn't sound like something you'd want to do regardless of what the doctor says then I'd encourage you to just skip the alcohol that night.

The intention of the liquid diet is to shrink the liver. I would not advise consuming alcohol as the liver will enlarge making it difficult for the surgeon to see where he needs to place the band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
