Pysch Evaluation Question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm at the beginning of the sleeve surgery journey

and I'm freaking out about the psych evaluation, is it possible to fail and be denied for surgery? Can those experienced with the putsch eval give me an idea if what to expect? Thank you Angie

My psych eval. was easy. I thought I was going to fail, but it seemed like I sailed thru it. Be honest, know your stuff about sleeve surgery and know that it's not an easy fix. You'll do fine!

My psyc exam consisted of a bunch of questions, as well as some basic questions concerning my support system, habits, and my future goals.

I was scared when I had mine, but did ok. They even rated me on stuff I didn't expect. Like showing up on time, IQ and my appearance. I then spoke to the lady for about forty five minutes and then took a series of written test for about two hours afterwards. ( Some of it was hard at the end.... I wish I would have studied a little on the vocab part.) I believe if you answer the questions in a manner that alerts the doctor to things like severe depression, suicidal thoughts or you not being able to handle this major event...they may recommend other treatment before they give you a passing score for bariatric surgery. So I would not exactly call it "failing" more than you may just need more time/treatment to prepare for this life change. Also... she wrote down everything I said word for word!!!! I know this because I asked for a copy when it was completed a week later. (A copy that I had to go get in person with a photo ID and sign for)

Thank you so much for your input. I do my psych eval and nutrition on the same day, so it's going to be a big day and I'm nervous!!

My ins doesn't require nutrition and in fact doesn't cover it, it's one of my out of pocket expenses. My surgeon requires it

I had to do a written test too. It was like doing my SAT's again. It took about 1/2 hour.

Were they multiple choice answers or essay? Should I study?

In no specific order. Draw a picture of a clock, Solve number problems, Fill in the rest of this sentence, Substitute this word for another word just like it, Abouy 300 multiple choice questions about my life. Number and word problems combined.

Multiple choice. My test asked about me and how I think about certain things. My personality, if I am mentally stable, depression, anger and even my faith was mixed in.

The vast majority of psych tests are multiple choice, including all the ones I took during my psych eval. I know that this is a stressful visit, and I was worried. My personal advice? Just go in and answer their questions as honestly as possible. The main purpose of the psych eval is to evaluate if you are truly ready for this huge, life changing event.

I wanted this surgery more than anything else I can think of, but I went in and was honest about my history of depression and substance abuse (I've been clean for years). I wanted the psych to have all the info he could because if I wasn't ready, I wanted him to tell me! Personally, I can imagine nothing scarier than the thought of going through all this only to fail myself again! If that was the road I was headed down, I surely wanted him to tell me that! After stressing for 2 weeks after I saw him, worrying that I was "too crazy" for surgery, I met with him again and he approved me.

Best of luck to you! Know what you are getting into with the surgery and be as honest as you can and I'm sure you will be fine!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
