Swallowing Pain In Throat As Food Travels Also Pain In Back

Recommended Posts

My surgery was November 11, 2013. I notice pain when I eat small portion chopped tuna. Is this normal? How long does it last? Chest and back pain only when I try eating very small portions

I was sleeved the 11th too and am having the same problem. Pain and tightness in chest when I try to eat. I guess I'm eating too fast even though it doesn't feel like it. Or maybe too big of bites but its happening even when I eat egg custard which is pretty flimsy so I'm interested in the answers you get to this as well.

Hi there !

I had my sleeve on October 21st. It is about 5 weeks out from that. I am very happy with my weight loss, but even more with the adjusting of my attitude about food.

I think I know what you mean about the discomfort in your throat... what I have found is that the whole rage of sensations is very strange and really takes some getting used to. I am not there yeat at all. I was placed on full liquids for 2 weeks, then purees only for two weeks, then soft foods for 2 weeks ( I am still in that stage), before I can add any other foods. Definitely I have struggled with the speed of eating - too fast creates a bad sensation, like pain in the upper stomach, lower throat, almost like you have swallowed air. So I am trying to eat more slowly, which is difficult when you feel hungry.

Also I have noticed that hunger and too full feel almost the same in my new stomach. It is strange how those signals communicate with your brain, though - not at all like it was before!

try softer foods, more purees, and eat slower - see if that helps. It definitely is a journey. I am so happy though! Good luck to you guys!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
