I talked to a good friend of mine who is an accountant and she said medical and dental expenses (including travel) is tax deductible. Doesn't matter where it's done....I'm going to Mexico. I believe it is entered on your schedule A and unreimbursed expenses over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income is deductible. I.e. If your adjusted gross income is 30,000, you can deduct all expenses over $2250. Unless, of course, you have an HSA insurance policy, then all money paid through the account is deductible.

**I am NOT an accountant, so don't take my advice as absolute truth :)

I would also suggest asking your doctor for a prescription for Protein shakes and bariatric Vitamins. Once you add all those in, your chances of meeting the deductible required for tax purposes (x% of gross Income) is much better.

As kindle said, I too am not an accountant so.... )

I absolutely claimed it, along with my expenses on my taxes, and received a very nice refund that year!

That's my plan. I withdrew money from my 401K to pay for surgery so the deductions will hopefully balance it out.

I believe this has been raised to 10% effective for tax year 2013, unfortunately. Because I make more money than my wife, she is going to "pay" for my surgery and then we are going to file separately this year to maximize the deduction.

Since all things taxes scares me, I send everything to an accountant. However, since I financed my surgery do you think I would still be able to deduct it?

I have worked in taxes as an accountant since 1987. Have been sole owner of tax practice since 1992. The costs including travel expenses are deductible. It must be over 10% of income (changed in 2013 from 7.5%) unless you're over 65 then it is still 7.5%. My wife and I are having surgery in Mexico 5/20/14. I found out about surgeon and Beliteweight from a tax client who inquired about deducting costs. This started my journey on surgery. If you use a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, that would not be deductible because this is normally a pre-tax deduction through your employer.

Does anyone know if I can use my Flex Spending Account for reimbursement for the Sleeve surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
