Miss The Morning Coffee

Recommended Posts

All things about this surgery have been good but I wanna brew a starbucks was hooked on caffeine many years only off since surgery. (No Decaf for me flavor not there). They say after 6 months one cup is ok. I don't think i can make that. Everything else is fine but not the no Coffee! I'm well hydrated so I might take the plunge here soon but this early guess I should wait it out a bit? I had 3 Keurig's before surgery sold 2 because I knew wouldn't need them everywhere but josh I crave a good Thanksgiving bleand

I am only 5 1/2 weeks out and have a 1/2 a cup most mornings. I mix Protein powder in just so I don't feel as guilty! LOL Hasn't seemed to hurt me; I do try to follow the advise I've seen on these boards which is to view it as a treat and not count it towards Water intake. New tummy is still pretty tight so by 1/2 a cup I am full :)

I am pre-surgery and I think no coffee will be really hard for me. I love my French Roast. I think I am addicted to my two cups a day.

coffee (even decaf) is acidic to the stomach and can irritate your sleeve as you are trying to heal. Also, Caffeine is a diuretic and keeping hydrated postop is hard enough as it is.

I'm 3 weeks out and back to coffee I never drank so much Water in my life doing cardio down 30 first 2 weeks already. I think coffee fear is unfounded. I'm low carb guy too. These dietitians over play it all still think Atkins was much more on the ball then they are. No coffee 6 months mine said. I'm not going back to my 5-10 a day but 1 for now sometimes 2 is harmless. Damage to sleeve never heard of they told me hydration apparently many don't do well getting there water I did from 2nd day on

I heard coffee can cause ulcers and that is why they don't want us drinking it.

Caffeine is a diuretic but so is Water, and we don't avoid Water due to it being a diuretic. There may be legit reasons to avoid caffeine (acidic, central nervous system stimulant) but it won't harm your hydration level more than water will - which is to say, not at all. Unless you are drinking maybe 8 cups a day.

Also, coffee has significant health benefits for most of us:

I avoided coffee for the first three months post sleeve due to the acidity and possible harmful effects on the upper digestive tract specifically:

But since then I've been having a couple of cups of black coffee almost every day and have not noticed any negative effects.

I felt the same way. I was willing (and have succeeded) to change my eating habits, what I ate, activity level, and every other requirement that came with this surgery. Giving up coffee was not a compromise I was willing to make. I did stop before surgery and I got clearance at about 6 weeks to resume. I avoid coffee with Vitamins so I don't get absorption issues. I try to limit to no more than 3 cups a day, and most days is 1-2.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
