How To Cope With Comments When Eating Out?

Recommended Posts

This is tough for me and it has happened several time recently. I have just started a new job and had an office luncheon today and it was very obvious that I only ate about 1/4 of my food. At least five people at the table commented on how little I ate. Obviously having known these people for one week, I don't really want to divulge my full medical history. How do you handle these awkward eating out situations?

I always tell people when they make comments like that That I'm trying to lose weight. I'm not telling anyone about the surgery tho.

I haven't had that come up yet, but if it does, I'll say something like, I am trying to lose weight so I have to really restrict my portions - doctor's orders! If you throw in a "doctor's orders!" when talking about what you eat, people generally back off fast and don't question you more about it. Also, it's the truth. Just maybe not the whole truth.

Once I heard a pastor who was talking about how to deal politely with intrusive questions. He said that you don't have to lie, but you don't have to tell everything you know.

My surgeon gave me a card to carry with me when I'm able to go out that states to please accommodate any request I have or let me order children's portions. As for who I tell or not, I haven't run into that yet, but have a cookie swap coming up in December, so I'll let y'all know.

My pain was the Water. When I said no thanks I don't want anything to drink that always made the server prod and ask are u sure? Maybe some water? Really nothing to drink? So now I just say water please and I don't drink while I eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
