Day 6 Post Op Eating Solid Food With No Problems! Is This Ok

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone Im a Newbie I received my Lap band 11/21/2013 and my weight then was 219.6 as of today I'm 211.3 and counting, My goal weight is to be 165.00. But my question for my fellow Bandsters is it ok to eat solid food being only that Im 6 days post op, I was schedule to be on a liquid diet for 1 week and then puree the next. Its Thanksgiving tomorrow and yes Im cooking dinner for the family but I Opt to eat some bake fish which is healthier, but not puree YUCK!! LOL (dnt think I will just stick to liquids one more day and on to the mushies)... Please help I dont want to mess anything with my band up. Has anyone else ate solid food before their week on the liquid diet was up. Thank You in Advance!!

All I can say, it is very important to follow your Dr's directions...ESPECIALLY in these first phases....you have to build a sound foundation in the beginning to have a successful lifestyle later on.....

But I am not here to tell anybody else what they can and cannot do....just my experiences....I can get away with all sorts of things I won't even mention on this forum....not many would understand or believe me....BUT it would not have been possible if I did not get it right from the beginning....that's what I believe...

its always best to follow your doctors instructions for best results...

seems to me if you are concerned about eating then you already know the answer to your question...

ACTUALLY I DONT KNOW NOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE BAND EXACTLY WHY IT WAS A QUESTION I WAS TOLD LIQUID FOR 1 WEEK AND THEN PUREE THE NEXT WITH THAT BEING SAID IM NOW AT PUREE AND I SIMPLY TRIED solid food YESTERDAY TO SEE IF I WOULD HAVE ANY PROBLEMS AND I HAD NONE. THANK YOU!!! AND AT CAROLINAGIRL IM NOT CONCERN ABOUT EATING BUT WHEN COOKING dinner I DO LIKE TO TASTE MY FOOD!!!! IVE JUICED FOR 30 DAYS WITH NO PRBLEMS!!! SO I THINK I CAN GO WITH OUT food

I agree with B-52 and CarolinaGirl. Follow your Dr's orders, especially after just having the surgery! When I had mine back in September, I was told 2 weeks liquids. After 1st week, I felt I was ready for mushies and asked my Dr's nurse and was told to stay on liquids. You need time to heal. Good luck!

So the question is, "Is it Ok to ignore my Dr's orders"? The answer: Only if you know more about the band than the person who installed it.

Think it through. The Dr. didn't give you those instructions because he is a killjoy who wants to punish you. He gave you those instructions because they will give you the optimal outcome for your surgery, and reduce the risk of you ending up on his table again to have a slip (or worse) fixed.

You've worked this hard to get the band and you are off to a great start BUT Is it really worth risking losing it because of a holiday? Liquid and puree was tough no doubt but we all have been through it. If it were me personally I would follow the Docs directions to the letter. This is so early in the game for you and you are still in a healing stage.

Another thing and this may come across harsh: If you cannot follow a few weeks of a particular diet are you sure you're really prepared for long term success and life change??

There will always be other holidays...and they come around every year.

I actually hated Puree stage as well. I opted to stick with liquids and the only thing I ate was cream of wheat. Not the healthiest of choice but it's all I could handle.

My wife is also banded she had pureed chili and loved it. I am not a fan. LOL.

Again, it was not my intent come across harsh at all. I guess we all get a little passionate when it comes to the band. So many of the failures come from Non compliance and it becomes just another failed band statistic. I have a hard time grasping how one can go through this long process and not be able to follow a 2 to 4 week limited diet.

Again, best wishes

The whole point for being on liquids and puree foods is so the stitches that are holding your band in place can heal. Liquids for when you are at highest risk of having stitches become damaged. The puree stage is when the stitches are partially healed, the stomach can move a little bit without putting much pressure on the sutures. When you eat solid foods, your stomach digests the food, shakes around while further breaking down the food. The doctor gave you dates according to healing time. It is your choice, but to start sooner can put you at risk for breaking the sutures thus causing the band to slip out of place, or cause damage to the stomach if a suture gets torn out.

I did not follow my Dr's orders to a T! I ate solid food with in two weeks. I ate very very small bites and the key was to wait 5-10 mts in between a few bites. You do NOT want to get to full! Its horrible. I took it easy and I was fine. But to each there own. Its hard for any DR or anyone to tell you what to do or not do when they have NOT had the procedure done. It is very different from the things they told me when I went through all the classes and seminars before surgery. You will do a lot of living and learning. The key is small bites, chew really really well and then wait! Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks everyone for the input. Again I was simply asking a question. Im NEW to this whole thing and obviously I got it for a reason just like all of you did and I can follow my Dr's order just fine. But my Dr does not have the band so he cant tell me the weird feelings n cravings etc. Again It was a question and wanted to know if I was the only one who has done this so I appreciate all the feedback. Im a BIG GIRL so I can take all the harsh and rude remarks...*smile* And I'm good this way Hope each of you have a Wonderful Thanksgiving...God Bless

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
