New Here, Banded Awhile Ago, Starting Over

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Well I'm new here. I was banded 3 1/2 yrs ago. Did okay at first, lost 60+ , then the last

Yr started having horrible reflux. They said I was too tight so I ended up having 3 unfills, needless to say no more weight loss n actually gained a few. The reflux got so bad we ended up taking almost all Fluid it of my band...I was afraid to get a fill again n now I've gained all my weight back ,:( I've had enough and tomorrow I go back for a fill n try it again. I'm afraid my surgeon is going to tell at me, I'm ashamed n embarrassed but I need to do it for my health. I know now what I need to do, I have admitted I'm a food addict. My husband doesn't care what I weigh n think I've used that for an excuse, but is that a form of control on his part? His insecurity?

Anyway, wish me luck tomorrow. I'm gonna make this site my new bff cuz I also realize I need the support!!

L.

Best of luck. I might recommend Overeaters Anonymous to help deal with some of the stress and remember you are doing this for yourself.

Your surgeon will be HAPPY that you are going back in to start fresh. They are there to help you with the whole journey, not just the early honeymoon phase, and you can't possibly be the first person to go in and need to start over. You can do this =)

Good luck and keep us posted!!

Naw! He won't yell if he's a professional. Just be honest with the doc about your eating habits and the struggles you're experiencing.

Why would he yell at you??? For having a medical condition, as Reflux?

Your story just goes to prove that Weight Loss comes from the band...Why else did we go through this surgery???

You were doing fine, had a few fills, lost weight......THEN because of problems beyond your control, you had Fluid taken out, Thus weight gain....Proves it is the band...I know for a fact I could not loose weight on my own without the band...I'm doing fine right now, but if I should get the slightest fluid take out, it would disrupt this perfect balance....

On the subject of reflux...it is a common theme among banded people....I know I had / have my issues with it....but I have learned to control it by not eating foods that are too spicy....or to eat near bedtime. I won't eat anything after 7pm....

My biggest problem is I can't give up my Bloody Mary's....and I never mix food and Alcohol so it's always on a empty stomach...

Best wishes, we are here for you. And as B-52 stated sometimes you have to realize what caued your refulx. I can't eat past 8. If I do, I will be up all night caoughing, too! Your surgeon will not yell at you, reflux is common and taking the fil out is the fix. Make sure that you did not have a slip, too!

Boxergal...Congrats on going to see your surgeon!!

Like you, I've been through that phase when my band wasn't adjusted correctly for me. My loss stalled, stopped, then I actually gained some weight! I was embarrassed, felt like I had failed, the band wasn't gonna work for me, etc. I've written about it on here before.

FINALLY, I had a friend encourage me to go back to my doctor. I went....not looking forward to the chastising I was sure I would get....and deserve. But that wasn't the case at all. My surgeon and I discussed my situation and he was very encouraging and understanding. He showed me why.....it was right there in my charts/records he had. I'm a failure at dieting long term. We got my band adjusted correctly for me, and IT made all the difference in the world.

You've taken the most important step....you're going back to see him/her.

I wish you much success in your future. NEVER, EVER give up! :)

Welcome! I am just three weeks out -- we can all get healthy together. Choosing yourself is a powerful thing. My husband and I have been married 22 years and have a close relationship. Still, he needed to hear it out loud -- I am in love with him and not going anywhere when I'm thin. It was a silly thing but he there was some deep fear buried in that hulky brain. We don't need our spouses sabotaging in even the smallest ways -- we need them all in. Choosing yourself and your healthy future is a very powerful thing. You can do it! You ARE doing it. Best wishes!

Thank you all for the great advice, my appointment went really good. It had actually been a year since I had unfill!! I thought it was only 6-7 months. Anyway,I gained back 30 lbs and still under my preop weight. I saw the dietician to get me back on track, she thinks I wasnt getting enough calories and nowhere near the Protein I needed, the surgeon was very nice and didn't yell at me lol.

Again, thanks for all the input!!

Happy thanksgiving!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
