Never Full, Constantly Hungry

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Oct 29th and constantly feel hungry. I see posts where people talk about being 6+ months out and get full off of a few bites. Is what I'm going through normal? Does your body adjust with time?

I was banded Oct. 11th. I have had one fill and I am always hungry. I was told to be patient and consume more Protein. I have started doing 7 small meals a day. I am not as hungry and I am losing weight. I have started cutting up Protein Bars and I put them in a zip lock bag. If I start feeling hungry I take a couple small pieces. I am learning that the small meals are helping. ;)

You may have acid which mimics hunger. Firstly, your stomach will also be making lots of noises but it does not mean that you are hungry. Mine still does and I am 14 months out. Try taking an OTC like Prilosec and see if it helps, I bet it will.

Lots of people do feel lots of hunger until they are in full solids and can eat dense Protein. Also you may well have hunger a couple hours after eating, but physical hunger should be easy to satisfy. You simply won't have much capacity. Don't be fooled by not feeling the restriction at first. Your nerves are still healing and liquids and mushies go through quickly. They would be classified as sliders later in your journey, but they have their place in the beginning when your stomach is healing.

And the stomach acid "hunger" is real. Most people take a PPI like Nexium for at least the first 6 weeks. I am 6 months out and still need to take 20 mg nexium each day. This is totally different from tums or rolaids. It doesn't neutralize acid but keeps your stomach from producing as much. Some of our stomachs still want to produce enough acid to digest our old normal food capacity even after the surgery.

I was having hunger issues as well, but increased the time it wait to drink after eating from 30 minutes to an hour and it helped. I'm able to drink normally, so I guess I was washing the food out faster than I would have if I could only just sip.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
