Help Help Help.... I have been on here trying to figure out a Dr. I should use in the Ft. Lauderdale area... I have a surgery date set for Dec. 4th but the more I have read about what other people have self paid I think I am being taken advantage of ... At first the price 20 grand, now its up to 23. And they are saying it is 16,000. just for one night in the hospital. I am ready to bail out... But I really want surgery. Seems most people are paying around 12 grand ...Please give me some names of GOOD doctors in the Ft. lauderdale area....PLEASE!!! HELP HELP HELP!

Not familiar with Dr's in Florida but I can tell you surgery local for me was going to be between 18-20k self pay, I'm going to Dallas using one of the top surgeons in that area for 12,200 hotel and pre-op included. Only extra was my plane ticket and that was less than 350 bucks round trip.

Sounds like something is hinky in Whoville with the pricing you're getting.

Fly to Vegas for Dr. Umbach (Newsweek Showcase's #2 Bariatric Surgeon in 2012, I think). There are cheap flights from everywhere.

I paid $11K. Was sleeved 2 weeks ago. I can't say enough good things about the folks there.

Thank you for your replies.... I went ahead with Dr.Jacobs in Miami and I couldn't be any happier. I flew in on Sunday evening, had tests all day on Monday, Tuesday I got sleeved. I am 4 days out now and so excited for this journey. I feel better and better everyday, and looking forward to a healthier and thinner me... He was WONDERFUL and a very educated Doctor.... I would also like to thank the people on this site for all the education I have gotten from reading things on this site.....I have spent hours on here and it has helped me soooo much.... Again I say Thanks!

I paid $20,000 and could have gone with a cheaper option (a few grand), but wanted to go with the best doctor. Had mine on 12/2 and glad I went with the better doc. Glad you had yours done and are happy with the choice!

I'm right there with you. I was looking at traveling to TX to spend 12K but did a ton of research and found a doctor near me who is stellar but costs about 6K more. Yes, I could save the $$$ but this isn't something I wanted to go cheap on. I know lots of folks have gone to Mexico and have had great results. I also have heard of a number of people who went to Mexico and who had complications and nowhere to turn once they were home. I've traveled to Mexico many a time - but it was not my first choice for medical care.

I had to make a list of pros and cons for my choice of surgeon and once I did that it was clear it made sense for me to spend more, stay close to home, and have a surgeon at a Center of Excellence with very happy patients. The idea of traveling after surgery and not having strong aftercare made me realize that yes, he may cost more, but he offers more and by golly, I'm worth it :)

. I'm in Huntington, West Virginia so I went with Dr. Nease at cabell huntington hospital. He has great reviews with everyone in the community and people drive a few hours away to come to him.

Seriously.... 20 grand is worth my life. I tooo have a friend that went to Mexico and had great results. Still one can pay 20 grand and have problems too....I just felt easier about doing it in the states. I flew from Oregon to have Surgery in Miami for a couple of reasons. Dr. Moises Jacobs is highly recommended and his staff was wonderful ....He himself is more personable than most people you would ever meet. He teaches other Doctors how the procedure works... Second.... My Bestee lives here and I thought that a couple weeks away from snow and freezing weather in Oregon was a great place to hear! I too got real confused about the lower prices I was seeing.... For me.... The bottom line was to be with a Doctor that I felt the best with. Ps. Susysleever, I already have a car. But I understand your thoughts. Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
