How experienced should your doctor be?

Recommended Posts

My doctor has done a little over 300 surgeries and I am wondering if that is enough experience or should I try someone else. Thanks for the help!

Hiya travelchicky, I had this same question, so I called Allergan (the people who make the band in the US) and asked that (and some other things). I know many people here are going to answer and say that 5000 is better than 500, etc... Which is probably true to a point (though sometimes I think if that's all they do all day it becomes so automatic I wonder if they really pay close attention to each and every procedure like they did when they were pretty new at it...) but back to the subject at hand:

Here's what the band guru at Allergan told me about band surgeons (the one I'm going to go with has only done about 100 bands, but over 2000 laparascopic procedures). He told me that after surgeons have done 100 bands they are considered an "expert" by Allergan and then can begin proctering (teaching) other surgeons to place the Lap Band.

Long story short, I think 300 Lap Bands is plenty of experience.

The other option my insurance comany would pay for is the hospital where I am and those surgeons have not even placed a single band yet. That is too inexperienced for me... :faint:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
