When Does This Get Better?

Recommended Posts

I have been sick since having my surgery 11/5. I NEVER feel good. I still can hardly get Water down (I manage about 40 oz a day which doc didn't seem concerned about), taking my Vitamins physically hurts for 30-40 minutes and the only way I can get my Protein down I can still only manage every couple days. I feel nauseous ALL the time and I am exhausted. I'm lucky to get in 40 calories in a day (still on clear liquids). I've tried the nausea meds the doc gave me and they don't make a difference. Has anyone been through something like this? When did it start to go away? Feeling sick all the time is really starting to bum me out big time. I'm starting to freak out that I'll always feel crappy.

Hi there.

I was sleeved on 11/14, so we're close.

I couldn't stand the taste or feel of plain Water in my mouth - by Day 3 I was dehydrated. I started drinking Vitamin Water Zero and that helped a lot. I had no issues drinking that. My doc also approved Propel Zero and Gatorade Zero, but I stuck with the Vitamin Water.

I am not cleared for Vitamins until later this week, so I can't help with that.

Were you told to take in any Protein at all?

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling so bad... 40 calories a day is not good!! Have you talked to your doctor about the lack of calories??

And why Clear Liquids still? Is it because of the nausea?

CAll your dr and get a prescription for zofran! I spent my first 6 weeks in misery from the nausea (I told my dr about it, but he didn't know I had not taken the zofran home from hospital and I didn't know I was supposed to- major miscommunication) and I did not get my Protein or Water goals in at all! Soon as I started taking something, I felt amazing!

I told my doctor all about it when I went in last week. He didn't seem concerned at all, he talked about how big my stomach is and how there's swelling and it will go down and so on. He told me to dilute the Protein and use unflavored (it worked for a couple of days but my tastebuds are out of control). The diet for my surgeon is clear liquids through week 4, pureed 5 and 6, soft 7-8 and solids and meat starting week 9. I have a prescription for zofran and reglan and phenergan. None of them work.

Clear liquid then right to purée?? What happened to full liquids??

I would call and ask about incorporating full liquids before purée..

At least you would be able to try and get some calories and Protein in via a shake..

Megan, I'm so sorry to hear you are feeling so ill. Warm tea perhaps? I couldn't take cold Water but chamomile tea worked for me. I agree with Laura on the liquids, it seems like you should be able to do full liquids at 6 weeks. It's definitely worth a call to your doctor or nut to find out. Protein Shakes, or even a glass of milk, would do wonders for you. I think Isopure liquid Protein Drinks are consider clear liquids, but you can check with your doctor. You can get them online or at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. Try it over ice, 8 oz at a time (trying to get down the entire enormous bottle at once is a bit daunting, so break it up over the day).

Boil some fresh ginger slices in Water and add a Splenda if you'd like. It will help with the nausea and may be easier to get down.

I had nausea bad, and my doctors nurse sai to go for regular Gatorade and diet ginger ale. She said Water and milk cause nausea. They put me on fenegran and added the drinks and within 24 hrs I was better. Call your doctors office and see if you can add Gatorade. She said we had to forget the rules and gets hydrated... And let the ginger ale go flat.

Hello,

I'm new to this site....

I had my surgery on Sept 27. And I have pretty much been sick ever since.

I can't drink plain Water, I use Crystal Light Green Tea Mango, about they only liquid I can tolerate.

But almost anything I eat makes me nauseated....I know I'm not getting in as many calories as I should but I just can't eat that much.

I have to be careful taking the vitamins....they upset my stomach too...

Hope to find out some answers soon.

The dietitian said to do a drink with fruit/veggie/fiber/protein to get what I need.....but I don't want to live on a liquid diet for the rest of my life....I want real food!!

Thank you,

Kathy

Hi, i realise this maybe too late but it may help someone else, I had my sleeve done in April 2013, my dietician told me Water is a hard Fluid and if you add cordial or something to it even benefibre (fibre powder that doesn't thicken up) which we have in Australia it makes it more palatable, I also started taking Iron tablets in my 2nd week which helped me immensely. I also found that the acid coming up from my stomach made all food taste revolting, it pays to take any reflux/antacid medication, and to sleep elevated because mine got so bad I had sun burn on the roof of my mouth. Do not have any fizzy drinks, make sure they are very flat! The bubbles hit the sides of your stomach pouch and can split the stitches it's not worth it! I made up chicken and vegetable Soup and vitamised it to fluid soup, for the first few days on clear fluids I strained out the chicken and vegetables, this I froze into ice cube trays I started out at one cube every hour to being able to keep more cubes down as the swelling reduced. I hope this is useful.

Hi Hummingbird, I take night time Vitamins you could probably ask in your chemist about some, I have never felt sick from them. If you were sleeved in Sept I would have thought you would be getting better now, I had started to introduce nuts, after 6 weeks post op your swelling is minimal, I was having custards, scrambled eggs and omelettes not big serves not even a whole egg but it slides down :). I still don't drink a lot of plain water.

I think right now the most pressing needs are your nutrition. If all you can do is Protein Shakes and Gummy Vitamins twice a day then do that. I puree my Soup add a little half n half to the chicken broth. I drink skim milk a lot. Even if you purée Beans and veggies with chicken broth do that. Nutrition is no. 1

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
