Dumping? Slimed?

Recommended Posts

I'm one week out and am following a lot of threads on here. Thanks to you all. It has been very helpful. But I have read about some of you eating things causing dumping or slimed. What are these?

Dumping syndrome:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dumping-syndrome/DS00715

Dumping is more likely to happen to people with gastric bypass than the sleeve, but it does occur for some sleevers too.

Sliming/Foamies: usually happens when you eat too much or eat too fast. You may get a sensation of something "stuck" in the upper part of your stomach or chest (or you may not, it all varies), of being terribly overfull, and nauseated. You feel very uncomfortable and may start to feel just taken over by complete exhaustion. You feel like you need to throw up, but can't, and then your mouth starts watering like crazy (like right before you would throw up) and you start hacking up gobs of clear, foamy, slimy liquid. It is NOT pleasant! A very strong lesson to not eat as much, and/or eat slower, next time. Sometimes people get the slimies just from eating the wrong kind of food before they are ready for it, but I think usually it's too much/too fast/too big pieces of food.< /p>

I get dumping on occasion, typically when I eat something my tummy is not ready for. I'm at 3 1/2 months now and it's much less common, but I had it weekly in the first few months. I distinctly remember eating 4 fresh strawberries and having an explosive exit within a short amount of time. eggs can do it sometimes, even drinking a Protein shake too fast can sometimes do it.

Sliming typically happens when I eat too much too fast. Bites are too big, I don't wait enough time between bites. Very unpleasant.

Dumping isn't (only) diarrhea. It is flu-like symptoms. A smaller stomach means things just go through faster and you can get diarrhea from high Fiber things like strawberries. I am very familiar with diarrhea since it turns out my gall bladder stopped functioning right after I got my sleeve. It took 6 months and heaps of tests to figure it out. I've had it removed and have to take a medication called Questran to control the diarrhea, which is specifically called bile acid diarrhea. Not related to the sleeve and not dumping. I'm just "lucky". It might get better on its own in a few years or might not, but the Questran manages it completely.

I'm 3 1/2 years out and still to this day, if I don't watch very carefully what I eat and HOW I eat (especially things like dense chicken breast, cornbread, dense stuff) I will inverably wind up getting the "slimes" and HOPEFULLY, (yes, I mean that) throwing it up because it is sheer misery otherwise!

I have always eaten very fast and still dont take enough time and slowly eat. :( Sliming is the worst and as Mistysj said, it can be not only sliming but really feel sick like shaky, flushed, sweaty. Trust me - slow down - dont eat too fast - follow your program and it's all much better! :)
