Who Is Drinking Sodas

Recommended Posts

Some people advise against drinking carbonated drinks... My dr said to drink diet. Only if your stomach can handle it. It doesn't stretch out your pouch...it would only hurt if you have gas issues...

I don't have any issues with carbonated beverages but having said that. I've heard that too much soda (even diet) is not good for your skin. I've cut back drastically on diet soda. I used to drink it everyday but now I let the diet soda sit to make it goes slightly flat. I do enjoy very much

ICE naturally flavored sparkling mountain Water. I have at least one bottle daily. Have not had any issues. Good luck to you.

I'm just going to mention what my surgeon's rules are. He went to a gastric sleeve convention of some of the worlds top bariatric drs. and one of the things they have discovered is that carbonation DOES affect the sleeve. So his recommendation is to quit anything carbonated.

Constant use of carbonated beverages will stretch the sleeve.

I quit Sept. 20, 2010 and have not touched anything carbonated since. That is just my personal thing, it was a easy thing to let go of. I used to drink at least 1 diet coke every day, and I've found that I can live quite normally and naturally without my precious diet soda.

I'm not telling anyone what TO DO, just what I've found works for me personally. By all means follow your surgeon's advice

For me it's not worth the risk of possibly stretching my pouch.

One last note...I'm going to move this to the food & Nutrition instead of in the Gastric Sleeve Surgery Buddies/Mentors topic.

I had a whole list of instructions and surgeon's expectations for life after the sleeve, and one is absolutely no carbonation.......I had a soda the day I went to that initial informational session in April.......and haven't had one since......and I loved soda.....I'd drink diet or regular, whatever was available. HTH, good luck!

I have one occasionally. I don't every day because it affects my reflux, but I don't completely avoid them either.

On my diet plan flat soda is acceptable on the third day. Flat soda isn't good though lol. I have cut it out so I'm not worried about it but it will be nice to enjoy a soda, later on.

My surgeon said no carbonation because it will stretch your sleeve out. He said there will be other surgeons out there saying it will not stretch it out, but don't listen to them. My cousin had the by-pass and the one thing she regrets is starting to drink pop. She said it messed with her new stomach.

I did try a little sip of a pop, after surgery and I thought it tasted horrible and the fizz and carbonation burned my mouth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
