acspringhill 4 Posted November 24, 2013 I have read other posts on this forum from Google searches before creating an account, now I can't find the original thread now that I am registered. I had gastric sleeve surgery on 11/21 and was discharged Friday, the next day. I am feeling a lot of soreness/tenderness on one of my IV injection sites. Out of three used, the one on my top right hand is very sore to the touch and any kind of squeezing action, such as opening bottled Water, is painful. The site was red yesterday but now it is just warm to the touch. The first time I felt pain there was the final flush the nurse pushed the liquid in a little too hard and it hurt. Since then the pain is persistent, only upon touching the top of my hand or trying to squeeze or make a fist. Is this something that will go away soon or could it be a complication that should have subsided by now? The other 2 IV sites on my left arm are not sore at all. I had to have all kinds of different fluids go in that site, from Dilaudid to beta blockers and nausea meds, perhaps one of those was so harsh it caused the leftover irritation? Otherwise post op I feel fine except my right side is in incredible pain when I get on my feet or sit down in a chair. Nowhere near any of the stomach/chest incisions. Thanks! AshleyBrookeRN 2 Posted November 24, 2013 Hi! Ive been a nurse for 5 years... Soubds like that final flush infiltrated the vein (vein blew or iv came out of vein into the skin). This is very common but very painful. You could have saline under your skin which hasnt absorbed yet. When this happebs you need to put heat on it. Heat aids with absorption abd pain. cathycnyrs 85 Posted November 24, 2013 When I was in the hospital my IV pulled partially out (was still in my hand), there was blood all over my hand, and my hand was swelled up like a baseball. I apparently pulled it when walking. They had to give me another IV of course, and told me if may take 4-7 days to go all the way down. I think it was totally normal about day 6. nillee 43 Posted November 24, 2013 I had a very sore IV spot on my left hand. That IV soreness lasted longer than the soreness from surgery! I'd say if it isn't getting worse, and doesn't seem infected it is probably normal. I think mine lasted like 10 days!
