Thyroid Issues Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am a month & 1/2 post op and just found out my freaking Thyroid is acting up. Had an ultrasound last week and I have a few goiters/noduals. Biopsy 12/5 & results on 12/13. Just wondering if your doctors checked for thyroid problems before surgery??? Well I am glad we found out about this problem early on. What could be more worse than having weight loss surgery and your thyroid gland is working against you?!?!?

At least now I have a reason why I was having weight problems.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Found out weeks before surgery that my thyroid was not active at all and in turn this why I gained so much weight. I was on the medicine 2 weeks prior to surgery. My SW was 274 on Sept. 18th I am now 244. Not as fast as I would like but I am down 3 pants size and for the past 4 days I've lost 2 pounds a day. I think we may lose slow but we're ok. My doctor said I'm right on point losing fat gaining muscle.

Hey girls, I have a hypo active thyroid and diabetes as well. Between those two and the required meds weight loss is a struggle but I keep at it. I take 200 mcg of synthroid daily.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in my early 20s when taking my mother to the thyroid cancer clinic - the specialist noticed my goitre and a biopsy was done. I took meds to shrink the goitre but not ongoing.

Though I've always struggled with my weight my thyroid levels stayed within the normal range (which I now know is a population range, not the range any one individual can swing across without noticing any effect). When I had my son (at 37) my thyroid turned completely belly up and I've been on meds since then - I'm 53 next week.

After my surgery I lost 20kg (about 44lbs I think) in 2 months and then stopped dead. Also had enormous problems concentrating and notice my hair and skin were v dry. Sure enough my thyroid function was way too low. I've increased meds and lost another 6kg in the past 4.5 months.

Not quite what I was hoping for - especially as we're (sleevers) told to really use the first 6 months well, as that is our optimal weight loss period. But the weight is slowly coming off and I'm now 6kg from my goal and a BMI of 24.

If you have thyroid problems keep on top of them in the months after your surgery - I waited a few months to even get blood tests done, and I'm really annoyed with myself about that.

I don't know what my levels are. Blood work is not back yet. All this just came about last week.

Thanks for sharing your story. I will be staying on top of this.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 8 yrs ago. Was banded last December and have lost ~100 lbs. I've even had the dosage of medicine go down. But it's very important to get the proper amount. Not just to lose weigh but all of the other symptoms. But my main point is that weight loss is possible when properly medicated.

Three and half years ago I gained 100 lbs in 6 months, went to my doc and demanded she test my thyroid levels. Yup, it was FUBAR'd. Three years later, we're still working on getting the dosage tweaked.... am currently at 150 mcgs.

That 100 lbs never came off and it seemed like I was fighting an uphill battle. That's one of the reasons I decided to go for the band, and thus far I've had amazing results. I'm literally down a pound a day since my pre-op diet started, 38 lbs in 38 days. I'm happy happy happy :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
